Obituary: Dec 19, 1926 Modesto News Herald (Newspaper - California)
http://www.cagenweb.com/archives/Obituaries/Stanislaus/1926Obits_b.htm
Resident of County Passes; Henry B. Horr, a resident of Stanislaus county for his entire life of 73 years, passed away Saturday at a Modesto hospital following a long illness. His death breaks a link with the earliest days of the pioneers in this county, as his father was one of the pioneer settlers, the old Horr ranch near Empire city on the Tuolumne being a familiar word since 1850. His oldest brother, Ben, was the first white child born in the county. A peculiar coincidence in connection with his death is the fact that it occurred on his 73 birthday, and two years ago, his brother, John, passed away, also on his 73 birthday. The family has held a ranch in Del Puerto canyon since the early days also, so they are pioneers of this district as well. The deceased was one of six brothers, three of whom, John, Frank and Charlie, are deceased while three, Ben of Palo Alto, Will B. of San Jose, and Albert P. of Patterson survive. Henry was making his home with the latter at the time of his death. The widow also survives. They have six children - Mrs. W. F. Hanell and Mrs. H. Sykes of Patterson; Mrs. Jose ? Livermore; and John ? Charley Horr. Funeral services were held ?day morning with Dr. ? presiding and interment at Del Puerto cemetery. Davis & Evans have charge of arrangements.

RALPH D. HOARD, D. O.
One of the rising young professional men of Merced, where he is building up a fine practice, is Ralph D. Hoard, a native of Union County, South Dakota, born April 20, 1895. There he was reared and educated up to the age of eleven. He later was associated with his brother in a flour mill in Oregon, and came to California in 1909 with this relative, first locating in Pasadena, where they were engaged in the garage and automobile business.
After some time spent in these different lines, Mr. Hoard decided to follow a definite profession, and one in which he felt an especial interest. He entered the Los Angeles College of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons, and after graduating in 1922, practiced in Los Angeles. Coming to Merced in October, 1923, he opened up offices here and has since been a part of the professional life of the city and county, building up a practice founded on the confidence and patronage of the people, who know him as a conscientious, able exponent of his profession, one who makes a study of each individual case, and uses the most modern methods to bring about a cure. His well-equipped offices are a testimonial to his success.
The marriage of Dr. Hoard, which occurred November 29, 1917, united him with Dorothy Crumley, a native of Canada. During the World War Dr. Hoard served in the medical corps attached to the 40th Division, went over seas with them, and was later transferred, spending altogether one year in France. He is a member of American Legion Post No. 83 at Merced.

Metamora got its name from an Indian word meaning "Among the Hills". This area was inhabited by many Indians and made for more than one scary moment for the early settlers, most of which were unfounded as the local Indians were very friendly. One such account was told by Mrs. Arzelma (Thompson) Fricke about an experience that happened to her Great-Grandmother. Lucy (Carpenter) Hoard was left alone with three small children at the Hoard House where they were living as well as operating the hotel while her husband
Lorenzo, went into Pontiac, probably for supplies. The north part of town was still all woods. She looked out the back window of the hotel and saw an Indian there making motions to her and she was very frightened. Finally she discovered that he meant her no harm but had killed a deer north of the village and had lost his hunting knife. Having no way to dress the deer, he wanted to borrow a knife. When he returned the knife, he also brought a quarter of the deer to show his gratitude. Metamora got its start as it was on the main trail from Fort Detroit to Fort Mackinac. It was first recognized as a town in 1838 (although some references make that 1836). One of the most famous settlers was Lorenzo Hoard, he passed through Metamora in the late 1830's and returned in the early 1840's and purchased land to establish residency so he could get a license to run a hotel. In 1842 he purchased the original town store and enlarged and outfitted it as a hotel. This became known as the Hoard House and is now known as the White Horse Inn.
