11810 | http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/mo/andrew/bios/h6000011.txt W. D. Hoar, the subject of the following sketch, was born in Lancaster County, PA., February 4, 1830. He is the youngest child of three sons and two daughters born to the marriage of William Hoar and Jane Norton. The former was a native of Pennsylvania, and was of English lineage. He was a blacksmith by vocation, and possessed energy and competency. He was respected by all who knew him. The latter was also a native of Pennsylvania. W.D. was reared in Bird-in-hand Village. His education was begun in the public schools of Lancaster County, PA., and completed in the Millersville State Normal School, situated in that county. He however, lacked one year of graduation at the Normal when the Civil War broke out, but patriotic and true to his country, he enlisted in what was known as Capt. Nevin's Independent Battery I of Light Artillery as a private, on June 26, 1863. He was mustered out of the service at Philadelphia, June 26, 1865. At the close of the war he went to Missouri, arriving at St. Louis in August of 1865, and after a short prospecting tour throughout the State, located at Savannah. Here he resumed the profession of teaching, which he had begun when he was seventeen years of age, teaching and attending school alternately until his enlistment in the army. Besides teaching several years in Andrew County, he has served two years as county superintendent. For the last few years of his life he has devoted considerable attention to farming, and owns a farm of eighty acres in Platte Township. In November, 1886, he was elected by the Republican party to the office of county Representative. In 1868, he was united in marriage with Mary E. Hobson, daughter of John and Jane (Phillips) Hobson. Two sons and one daughter have blessed their marriage. 11814 | http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/pa/chester/cemeteries/sadsburyunmarked.txt (Sat Mar 5 06:56:07 2005) , 17820 bytes Sadsbury MM Unmarked Burials: Chester Co, PA "No stones were erected for these burials, which are recorded in the old cemetery record, from which these names were copied. The numbers to the right refer to location; for instance, 119 ft. to the east and 103 ft. to the north of a specific point from which distances were measured within the cemetery....." These names are taken from a transcription and not from the original record. The transcription was made in 1979 and this copy of the transcription should be understood to be a guide only. I'm assuming that these burial were made from the late 1700s through the mid-1800s, but some burials may be older or more recent than that. I use the (*) to indicate that the transcriber used (D) or ditto marks. Sometimes it was used to indicate the same information as the previous line and some times it was used to indicate a relative of the previous person. I have no further information other than what is included here. Listed below are more than 450 burials in the Sadsbury MM cemetery that were never marked by a stone.Family groups can be guessed at using the burial coordinates. General Assembly. House of Representatives "Mr. Fisher rose and made the following remarks: Mr. Speaker : It becomes my painful duty to announce that Mr. Francis Horr, my colleague, and member elect in the other branch of this General Assembly, is now no more. About four weeks since, he was attacked with a malignant fever, which confined him to his bed, and from which he never rose, but expired on the 11th instant, at 10 o'clock, P. M., surrounded by friends, but leaving a bereaved wife and five or six small children to mourn the loss of a beloved husband and kind and tender parent. Mr. Horr was a native of Maine, but had resided in the county of Delaware, in this State, (from which he was a representative,) near thirty years. He had been, for a number of years previous to his decease, an exemplary member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and died in the full confidence of a Christian's hope. He was in the vigor of manhood when, in the providence of God, he was taken from his family and numerous acquaintances. My personal acquaintance with Mr. Horr had existed but a few months previous to his decease, but even that short period had awakened in my bosom feelings of the warmest friendship. Although Mr. Horr did not profess to have talents of a high and brilliant order, yet his moral and social qualities were seldom equalled. As a husband, he was kind and affection ; as a parent, he was honored and beloved; and as a citizen and a neighbor, he was universally esteemed and respected ; and all classes will long mourn their irreparable loss. He is gone, and, I trust, to a brighter and better world ; but he has left to his family a rich legacy, in a character without reproach, and a name without a blemish. He has lett us, but his example and his virtues remain for our emulation. Mr. Fisher then offered the following resolutions, which were adopted: Resolved, That we deeply sympathize with the family and friends of the Hon. Francis Horr, late a member of the Senate, in their bereavement, in this dispensation of the providence of God. Resolved, That the members and officers of the House of Representatives testify their respect for the memory of the deceased, by wearing crape on the left arm for thirty days." | Horr, Francis (I10802)

I believe some Hoars assumed the "Hobart" name before it was official. In NY it takes an act of the State to change a name. For at least one year prior to the name change it must be advertised so creditors, etc. will be aware. "In the 54th Session of the NY State Legislature;" Chap. 137. AN ACT authorising certain persons therein named to change their Names. Passed April 16, 1831: "The People of the state of New York, represented in Senate and Assembly, do enact as follows: " and I will just give the names and places o Ruel Hoar of Sempronius, Cayuga Co., NY o Daniel Hoar of Venice, Cayuga Co., Ny o Gideon Hoar, Joseph Hoar, Samuel Hoar, Chester Hoar, Asa Hoar, Martin Hoar, Amos Hoar, Silvester Hoar, Alpheus Hoar, Johnson Hoar, listed as residing in the town of Homer (not village but that would be included in the town) Cortland Co., NY. The name change automatically included the wives and all children under the age of 21. All names were changed legally to Hobart at that point. And the records were sealed but you can get copies from the Cortland Co. Historical Society. The Cortland Co. Historical Society has a short genealogy of some of the Hoar/Hobart family by Kendall Hobart. His address is 1720 Ryan Dr., Lutz, FL 33549. He has traced the Hoar/Hobart family line. There is also a genealogy by Edgar Hobart of the Hoar- Hobart Family. He has traced the line to abt. 1636 in England and Kendall refers to this as well. There were a group of six brothers, all sons of Lt. Samuel HOAR & wife Doritha Hitchcock, who had been born in Monson, Massachusetts, and later moved to the Homer-Cortland area of New York, who changed their surname to HOBART in April 1831. These were Jacob, Gideon, Samuel Jr., Chester, Asa, and Martin. Another brother, Calvin, who remained in Massachusetts, changed his surname to HOYT at the same time. In about the same period there were a number of other relatives in the Monson-Brimfield area who changed their surname from Hoar. I don't know if any others changed to Hobart, but it is possible. Some in Massachusetts changed the surname to Homer (coincidentally(?) the name of the town in New York where most of the new Hobarts were living. April 16, 1831- Martin Hoar under Chapter 137 allowed to change name to Hobart Hoar/Hobart Gen by Edgar Hobart- The name Hobart in the place of Hoar was selected by several members of the family at Homer, NY for two reasons. About that time, Bishop Hobart, who had been an Episcopal missionary to the penal colony of England at Tasmania was lecturing in the United States. He was such a fine man and so interesting that the Hoars were much impressed by him and his name. Moreover, by taking the name of Hobart they only had to insert the letter 'b' and add the t to the name Hoar, so a majority of the family has adopted the name Hobart. Here and there however, branches of the family have taken the names of Homer, Hoyt or Pierce; and the Mass. branch, of which 3 members have been United States Senators still retain the original name Hoar. There is a tradition in the family that the name of Hoar was first given to the original ancestor from the fact that he was found when a baby wrapped in a shawl on a doorstep in London, England and that the shawl was covered with hoar frost; so the family that adopted him gave him the name Hoar. This story has been handed down from father to son for many generations. Resided in 1900 With his son John.
