ii NATHANIEL HOAR, b. Taunton 31 March 1656 [PCR 8:39; MD18:169]; m. Taunton 2 February 1681[/2?] Sarah Wilbore [PCR 8:80], daughter of Shadrach Wilbore [NEHGR 64:29-30, citing BrPR 1:213].

    iii SARAH HOAR, b. Taunton 1 April 1658 [PCR 8:39; MD 18:169]; m. Taunton 25 February 1691/2 Nicholas Stoughton.

iv ELIZABETH HOAR, b. Taunton 26 May 1660 [PCR 8:39; MD18:169]; m. by about 1690 (and perhaps a few years earlier) WilliamTurpin [Austin 209-10].

    v EDWARD HOAR, b. Taunton 25 September 1663 [PCR 8:39; MD18:169]; removed to Philadelphia by 21 March 1710/1 [BrLR 8:87].

vi LYDIA HOAR, b. Taunton 24 March 1665[/6?] [PCR 8:39; MD18:169]; m. Taunton 16 November 1688 John Whipple. (Lydia had an illegitimate son, named variously "Job Liddeason" or "Job Whipple," and born close to the date of her marriage [TAG 44:187-88].)

    vii MARY HOAR, b. Taunton 22 September 1669 [PCR 8:39; MD18:169]; m. Boston 2 December 1698 Duncan Mackum [BVR 244].

    viii REBECCA HOAR, b. say 1671; m. Taunton 20 February 1690[/1?]Samuel Smith.

ix HEZEKIAH HOAR, b. Taunton 10 November 1678 [PCR 8:83]; m. by about 1701 Sarah Brightman, daughter of Henry Brightman [NEHGR 142:18,citing BrPR 6:121-23]. (Forty-six years elapsed between the birth of Hezekiah in 1678 and the birth of the eldest child of his eldest child in1724 [NEHGR 142:20]. His date of marriage has been estimated simply by splitting this difference.)

ASSOCIATIONS: Hezekiah Hoar was first cousin of ROGER CLAP {1630,Dorchester} [GMB 1:364-70], the mothers of the two men being sisters [NEHGR 144:144; Kempton Anc 4:122-23]. Perhaps Hezekiah resided at Dorchester prior to his emergence at Taunton.

Savage states that this immigrant was "brother of John," meaning John Hoar of Scituate [Savage 2:430-31]. John Hoar and his siblings and mother were from Gloucester, Gloucestershire [NEHGR 53:92-101, 186-98, 289-300]. [There is no known relationship between these two families.]

COMMENTS: Given the lapse of forty-six years between the birth of this immigrant and the date of birth of his first child, one might wonder whether an additional generation should be inserted in this lineage. Hezekiah Hoar appeared rarely in Taunton from 1639 to 1653 [PCR 2:168,3:31, 8:186, 195]. On the earliest of these dates, the immigrant would have been about thirty-one years old, and so it must be he rather than a putative son of the same name who took the oath of fidelity. In the remaining records down to 1654, the designations of Senior and Junior are not used, and there is no other indication that one generation was succeeded by another. For whatever reason, the immigrant did not marry until he was about forty-five.

Hezekiah Hoar was propounded twice for freemanship [PCR 3:31, 78], but was never admitted to this franchise, as he does not appear in any of the later lists of freemen [PCR 5:276, 8:199, 205-6]. This clearly did not prevent him from serving in a number of minor town and colony offices.

BIBLIOGRAPHIC NOTE: In 1987 Lyon J. Hoard identified the English origin of this immigrant, and published four generations of his agnate ancestry [NEHGR 141:22-33, 142:17-24]. In 1990 Ken Smallbone published additional data which solidified the identification of the immigrant, and provided leads to extending the agnate ancestry a number of generations further back [NEHGR 144:143-46].[robby1940.FTW]

    Will
Hezekiah was named in his grandmother Channon's will in 1616,
and he witnessed Combpyne leases inreversion for his two older
half-brothers in 1633, at which time he had already made
arrangements to sail for New England. Record of Hezekiah's
iemigration is found in documents discovered by Peter Wilson
coldham in the Public record Office in London. A port book
entry dated 31 March 1633 lists Ezechia Hore among other
"planters" going to New England with household goods, apparell
and other goods allowed free of customs by patent to sail aboard
the ship "Recovery" of London, Gabriel Cornish master, sailing
from Weymouth, Dorset. Weymouth is about fifteen miles east of
Combpyne by sea, somewhat farther by land. The date of sailing
is not stated, but since a month's time elapsed between the port
book entry and the date on which Hezekiah witnessed the leases,
it is clear that he did not actually leave England until after
    30 April 1633.

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Barnard Hore was born about 1568 in Sidmouth, Devonshire, England (son of Henry Hore and Fides Osborne); died before 17 Jun 1634 in Sidmouth, Devonshire, England.

    Notes:

The first reference to Barnard that has been found is in the
will of his father, Henry, in 1589. On 4 July 32 Elizabeth
(1590), he became lessee of lands formerly held by his father,
when Sir John Peter [Petre}, knight, leased to Barnarde Hore,
mariner, for the consideration of 330 pounds, one humdred thirty
acres in Combpyne and ten acres in Downhunfraville in Axmouth,
all late in the possession of Henry Hore, deceased father of
Barnarde, to commence from the Feast of the Annunciation (25
March) next. The term was for ninety-nine years of the lives of
Barnarde Hore, William Hore, and Henrie Hore his brothers, the
rent to be 39 shillings 8 pence for lands in Combpyne and 6
shillings and pence for lands in Downhumfraville. Fides Hore
was to occupy certain premises during her widowhood and Barnard
was to live on the premises in Combpyne. The usual reservations
were made to the landlord for such things as timber and hunting
rights. It was signed by Bernar Hoor and witnesses Roger
Blackaller, John Osborne, and Roger Braunch. The terms are
repeated in the Manor surveys made about 1590 and 1612. Three
hundred and thirty pounds was a large sum of money for that
time, and although Petre tenants were allowed deferred or
"estalled" payments, Barnard paid cash in full. Fides Hore as
the widow refused her son Barnard's right to occupy the Combpyne
barton land called Lydeyates, and actually took, him to court
on the matter. It was possibly because ofa this family dispute
that Barnard moved, or returned, to the small port town of
Sidmouth abut twelve miles from Combpyne until after his
mother's death, although this was contrary to the terms of the
Combpyne lease. In 1610 the Petre family gave instructions to
their visiting agent "to see whether Barnarde Hore dwelleth at
Combpyne," but apparently did not actually return until about
    1613.
Barnard's first two marriages are recorded at Sidmoutn. The
names of Catherine Wheaton's parents and first husband have not
been found. "Chatherynge wife of Barnarde Horre gentellwoman
was buryed in the sothe elle [of the church at Sidmouth] meare
to the poolle pytte" on 3 December 1603.
The last record of Barnard in the parish of Sidmouth is on 9
October 1613 whe he, with William Pin and William Slade, made
the inventory of the estate of his father-in-law. It was after
his return to Combpyne that Barnard Hore married his third wife,
Mary. Their four children are named in land leases taken out by
Mary after the death of her husband. Barnard Hore died
intestate. Letters of administration were granted to Mary Hore,
relict, 19 June 1634 with a bond of 200 pounds to the Archbishop
of Canterbury by George Hardy, yeoman, and Leonard Hurden of
Axmouth. Witnesses were John Chisway, Thos. (Staward?), Edmund
Aishford (rector of Combpyne), and William Walton (curate of
Seaton). The estate, inventoried 17 June 1634 by George Hardie,
Leonard Hurden, Andrew Pounde, and John Pitts, totaled 176
pounds 2 shillings 10 pence, and included the house in Sidmouth
(probably a lease hold), and a debt of 50 pounds owed by John
    Peerce of Sidmouth.
Family leases taken out, renewed, or transferred between the
years 1633 and 1639 make it clear that during 1633 Barnard had
been distributing most of his estate to his heirs, perhaps in
anticipation of death. The inventory of his estate probably
represested but a small part of the family's worth. The money
paid for leases during the period 1633 to 1639 by the widow and
    Barnaard's two oldest sons totaled 293 pounds, 6s. 8d., a
    sizeable sum.
The first two leases, made the same day and transferring part of
Barnard's land leases to his two oldest sons, Hezekiah's older
hafl-brothers, contain Hezekiah's signatures as witness. On 20
April 1633 Petre family trustees leased to Hasper Hore of
Combpyne, yeoman, for the consideration of 100 marks (equal to
66 pounds, 13s. 4d.), with reversion after the death of his
father Barnard Hore, barton lands in Combpyne for the lives of
Jasper Hore and Helioner his wife, the rent to be 15 shillings
per annum. This was witnessed by Robert Hoore and Ezekias
    Hoore.
On 20 April 1633, the Petre family trustees leased to Robert
Hore of Combpyne, yeoman, a lease identical with Jasper's but fo
barton lands in Combpyne and Downhumfraville, Axmouth, for the
terms of life of Robert Hore and Garthured his daughter, rent to
    be 7s. 8d.
Witness were Jasper Hore and Ezekias Hoore.
This would have been a logical time for Barnard to have
distributed cash settlements to his other children, and to his
wife and her children. This may very well explain the source of
the funds which enabled Hezekiah to emigrate shortly thereafter
and to buy shares in the future settlement of Taunton, Massachusetts
On 13 July Chas. I (1639) Mary Hore of Conbpyne, in
consideration of 80 pounds, had transferred to her name the
lease of a cottage and fourteen acres and other lands in
Combpyne, now occupied by her in her widowhood, but lately
occupied by her late husband Barnard Hore. The terms were for
the lives of her sons John and Henry Hore. Witnesses were John
Vye and William Barbar. On the same date for the consideration
of 80 pounds, she leased lands in the manor of Downhumfraville,
Axmouth, for the lives of her children Samuel and Dyna.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  Henry Hore was born about 1534 in England (son of Richard Hore and Marriam Hellyer); died about 1590 in England.

    Other Events:

    • Event: 28 Nov 1589
    • Event: 27 Jun 1590

    Notes:

    Will
    Will proved
Henry Hore died between 28 November 1589 when he made his will,
and 27 June 1590 when it was proved.
Henry held land with his father from the Drakes at Ashe in
Musbury, and was living at neighboring Compyne between 1566 and
1580. The earliest surviving records fo the manors of Combpyne
and Axmouth (1566) show that Henry Hore had been granted a
reversion of copyhold premises, then being held by Margaret
Wykes in widowhood, to hold for his life. He does not appear on
the Combpyne Muster Roll of 1569, so was evidently not then in
possession. By the next Manorial Survey about 158-, he was in
possession of land leases from Combpyne Manor, including a
tenement and cottage with fourteen acres and eighty-four acres
of barton (farm) land, and from Downhumfraville Manor, at
Axmouth, he held a tenement and thirty-six acres plus eight
acres of barton land and grazing on the common for eighty-four
    sheep.
A later marginal note states that "Fides Hore widow holds the
customary tenements. The barton lands granted to Barnarde Hore
(her eldest son), and Henry and William Hore his brothers." As
will be seen below, some of the barton lands became a matter of
contention between Barnard and his mother. The word "mort"
besides her name on a grant of reversion dated 23 January 33
Elizabeth (1591) to Barnard and Henry Hore from Phillippe, Earl
of Arundel was probably added at a later date, because the Manor
Survey of 1596 indicated that Fides was still living at that
    time.
The will of Henry Hore left substantial sums of money to his
children and the residue to his wife Fides, who was to be
executrtix. He named as overseers "my father-in-law" William
Osborne, Esquire, and "his son" John Osborne, Esquire, Roger
Hore, and John Vy. William Osborne was a witness and the
inventory, recorded 1 April 32 Elizabeth (1590), was taken by
William Osborne, George Hore, and John Osborne.

Henry married Fides Osborne. Fides (daughter of William Osborne and (Unknown) (Unknown)) was born about 1547 in Musbury, Devonshire, England; died after 1596. [Group Sheet]

  2. 5.  Fides Osborne was born about 1547 in Musbury, Devonshire, England (daughter of William Osborne and (Unknown) (Unknown)); died after 1596.
    Children:
    1. Richard Hore
    2. William Hore
    3. Jasper Hore
    4. Margery Hore
    5. Henry Hore died in 1626.
    6. Gartred Hore
    7. Alice Hore
    8. Margaret Hore
    9. 2. Barnard Hore was born about 1568 in Sidmouth, Devonshire, England; died before 17 Jun 1634 in Sidmouth, Devonshire, England.

  3. 6.  Robert Channon was born about 1536 in Sidmouth, Regis, Devonshie, England (son of William Channon and (Unknown) (Unknown)); died in Nov 1616 in Sidmouth, Regis, Devonshie, England.

    Other Events:

    • Event: 30 Oct 1613, Sidmouth, Devonshire, England

    Notes:

Robert and Joan Channon, the parents of Bernard's second wife,
Mary Channon owned two fishing boats and various leased on
building and lands in Sidmouth. They were probably related to
the Channon Visitation family of Talaton, as the latter were of
    Sidmouth prior to 1547.
In an Exeter Consistory Court case of 25 June 1566, Mr. Walter
Rawligh, Rector of Sidmouth, sued Robert Channon and Richard
Gesse for the parish tithes on fish caught "out to sea by the
defendants or their servants." One may speculate that the
Channons were among the Devonshire mariners who were fishing off

    Will
Richard Hore died between 10 December 1569 when he made his
will, and 11 February 1569/1570 when it was proved. His wife
Marriam was evidently a widow with his two daughters by a
    previous marriage.
Richard is not named in surviving manor court records of his
father's deeds, but his parentage is indicated by his leasehold
of land formerly held by Thomas Hore from the Abbey. His name
is not on the 1569 muster rolls for militia duty, which may be
taken as an indication that he was then at least sixty years
old. A Consistory Court deposition by his son Roger shows that
by 1536 Richard was living in Musbury, where he held leases from
the Drake family of Ashe, a branch of the Drakes of Wiscombe,
Southleigh, from whence came the immigrant John Drake of
Dorchester and Taunton, MA and later Windsor, Connecticut Richard Hore
in his will dated 10 December 1569 and proved by his son George
11 February 1569/1570 named his wife Marrian and two
daughters-in-law [stepdaughters] Alice Whicker and Margaarete
Laveridge, probably Marriam's daughters by a previous marriage.
He named his own children Henry, Roger, George and Tomsen, and
mentioned the lease of the abbey grounds of Newenham [previously
held by Thomas Hore], which he left to grandson Priamus Hore.
He named as overseers Henry Hore and Roger Hore. Witnesses were
John Thomose, John Moore, and Henry Hore, and there is a
statement at the end that the will was "written by me, Augustine
    Endicott".
