After Cambridge travelled abroad and made some stay at the University of Danzig. Returned to Devonshire and received the benefices of Ash Reigny and Drewsteignton. From these he was ejected in 1647 or 1648 for his Royalist sympathies. Lived in retirement at Exeter for the remaining years of his life.
