Carol (Hoar) Stout died at Wake Robin, Shelburne, Vt. Sept. 23, 2008.

She was the daughter of Henry Leland Hoar and Katherine (Price) Hoar, born on 21 Sept. 1922 in New Britain, Conn. She attended Lincoln School in New Britain and graduated from Northfield School in Northfield, Mass. She had a music scholarship to Smith College and graduated with a major in biology in 1944. She worked for the American Friends Service in New York, which gave her the opportunity to meet Eleanor Roosevelt. After the war she worked for Macy's in San Francisco.

Upon her return to Connecticut in 1949 she met and married Richard Deming Stout and they started a family in Southington, Conn. Carol sang professionally as the contralto soloist for First Church of Christ in New Britain and was very active in the creation of the Junior League of New Britain. She served as president from 1953 to 1955 and helped create the Childrens' Museum, performed in many musical theater productions and became famous for her apple pies.

The family later moved to Chagrin Falls, Ohio and Carol was hired as the contralto soloist of St. Paul's Church in Cleveland Heights and she continued her activities for the Junior League, including providing music classes for inner-city children and participating in many white elephant sales. Upon retirement she and Dick moved back to Connecticut and there she became active with the New Britain Museum of American Art and the Garden Club of New Britain of which she was president from 1996 to 1998. Dick predeceased her in 1987.

Carol and her family spent every summer at their camp on the shore of Lake Champlain, Vermont with many old family friends. In 2001 Carol moved to Shelburne, Vt. and settled at Wake Robin where she enjoyed ringing bells and helping on myriad committees, especially the music committee. Carol has been a strong advocate for legislation to allow death with dignity.

Carol Stout is survived by her children, Penelope Stout-Hammar of London, England, Richard Deming Stout, Jr of Mclean, Va., and Anthony Trevarthan Stout of North Ferrisburg, Vt., their spouses and seven grandchildren.

There will be a Circle of Remembrance at Wake Robin on Saturday, Oct. 25 at 2:30 p.m. A separate memorial will be planned for family and close friends at her Vermont camp next summer. In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to Patient Choices at End of Life: www.patientchoices.org.
