Obituary:
William L. Horr Sr., 76, of Island Avenue, died Saturday at Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough.
He was born in Portland, a son of William E. and Elizabeth Calder Horr. He attended school on Long Island and graduated from Portland High School.
During World War II he served as an American merchant marine and was honorably discharged from the Coast Guard in 1945. Mr. Horr was employed as a merchant marine until 1976, when a disability forced him to retire. He enjoyed writing poetry and spending time at his Long Island home.
Surviving are two sons, David A. Horr and William L. Shorr, both of Portland; a stepson, Stanley Murphy of Standish; two stepdaughters, Diana Curry and Sharon Dixon, both of Windham; three sisters, Elizabeth Drake of Portland, Shirley Lalumiere of Falmouth and Shelia Reid of North Miami, Fla., and several grandchildren.
Visiting time will be from 1 to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Hay and Peabody Funeral Home, 749 Congress St., Portland, followed by a funeral service at 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Brooklawn Memorial Park.
