Emily Todd, also 83, and wife of prominent San Diego businessman O.W. (Junior) Todd, also has fond memories of the beauty and serenity of the little outpost. Her father, Bert Warren Horr, built the hotel and most of the residences in 1920. After he died in 1937, the property was sold to [Helen Miller] and her husband, Alvan Miller, a garage owner.
"My mother ran a grocery store and my dad ran a garage," Emily said. For overnight guests, there were seven rooms, but the bathrooms were down the hall. Emily was attending high school in Imperial Valley and later came to the San Diego Normal School, so didn't spend too much time at Bankhead Springs. "I would come up on weekends and for vacations in the San Diego and Arizona Eastern train," she recalled.
