John J. Hoar Sr., 97, died Tuesday (March 19, 1991) in his South Buffalo home after an extended illness.
Born in Buffalo's First Ward, he graduated from St. Bridget's School and attended Canisius High School.
Hoar was a member of the parish team from St. Bridget's that won the city basketball championship in 1913.
He was a Coast Guard veteran of World War I, serving aboard the Comanche, which made its home port in Galveston, Texas.
From 1916 to 1925, Hoar was a member of the Buffalo Fire Department until he retired after being injured on duty in 1925. From 1927 to 1957, he was an automobile salesman for several area dealerships.
Hoar was a member of South Buffalo Post 721, American Legion, and Court 5, Knights of Equity.
Survivors include two daughters, Teresa Weber of Pittsford and Marie Culligan; three sons, Paul Hogan of West Seneca, John J. Hogan and William Hogan, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Friday in St. Martin's Catholic Church, 1140 Abbott Road, with prayers at 9:30 in the Charles F. McMahon Funeral Home, 982 Abbott Road. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Lackawanna.
