- Geneanet (Defunct)
A small, multi-language based site that was historically used mostly in France and nearby regions. They exploded in use in 2020 due to adding a GEDMatch-like autosomal upload and match service. With the purchase of GEDMatch by a forensic, criminal genetics company, many grew concerned with the widespread use and access of public match databases by various governments and law enforcement agencies. Geneanet, being EU based, had the advantage of being behind much stricter privacy laws and is thus seen as a likely safer place to explore and operate. As of 2023, Geneanet shut down their match service and removed all uploaded, sample data. Thus returning to only their root of a genealogy tree upload site like the original geni.
Geneanet, beside operating Ancestry like services for individual trees and global source libraries, also operates Geneastar, Geneaweb and has a phone app GeneaGrave.
