This is a sub-category of the GG Industry entry in the Glossary. Grouped here are the traditional companies providing microarray format test services. Note that many are (possibly more) majorly a genealogy company. But we feel DNA test services is the overriding category to place them in here. Each company offers a wide range of services within the DNA test realm; sometimes even multiple products with varying degrees of accuracy or focus. The comparison chart of companies is over on the Genetic Genealogy Testing page for now (historical). We have since split the list and only cover traditional, microarray format test companies here. A parallel list of WGS Test Companies has been created.
Most of the traditional companies in the market have been offering Microarray Testing tests covering the autosomal and more. This since their introduction by 23andMe in 2008 and the dramatic drop in price in 2010 that spurred the market. Before that, specialized, very limited testing was available. FTDNA being the first in the genetic genealogy community with a y12 STR test back in 2000.
Due to growth of the sub-$500 WGS market and its application to genetic genealogy, we have moved those companies to a separate WGS Test Companies page. Similar to 23andMe, Dante Labs created quite a stir with offering the first sub-$500 test. Many have purchased WGS kits from them for $200 or less — flash sales they have once or twice a year. This has been spurring the likely transformation of the industry over to solely a WGS testing going forward. See our page on WGS and WGS Testing Companies for more information.
Table of contents:
Notes:
(a) NGG is really no longer in existence and joins others like SMGF and BritainsDNA that are relegated to the dust bin
(b) LivingDNA has yet to provide a Matches capability, a minimum for being listed as a genetic genealogy testing service
