I descend from Milton HOAR who married Fanny Worthington MORLEY on June 30th,
1827 in West Springfield Hampden County Massachusetts. They had the following
children. Robert, Maria Lorene, Emily Amelia, Mary Francis, Lucy Morley,
Susan Phelps, and Roderick.
I am and have been at a brick wall as to who Milton's parents were. He was
born probably late 1700s to early 1800s. Do any of the children's names match
anyone's surname or family names?
Milton changed the family name to WOODVILLE in 1849.
Thanks Jim

7812 From: History of Minnesota

Josiah Leavitt.
For a little more than thirty years, until his death a Minneapolis, January 4, 1895, Josiah Leavitt was one of the principal figures in the lumber and logging industry, associated with his son, Rensselaer C., and with his son-in-law, Augustus E. Horr, and with other notable pioneer lumbermen, including the Pillburys, Chases, the Havens and others. Josiah Leavitt was born in the State of Maine in 1808 and at the time of his death was eighty-seven years of age. He grew up in the Pine Tree State, and when he came to the Northwest as a pioneer brought with him long and successful experience as a Maine lumberman. He was married in 1831 to Miss Sallie Hill of Waterboro, Maine, and soon afterwards began his active operations as a logger and lumberman. His business operations in that field were continued for over thirty years. In 1864 Josiah Leavitt came to St. Anthony, Minnesota, to visit his son, R. C. Leavitt, and his daughter, Mrs. Augustus E. Horr, who had located here about a year before. So impressed was the veteran lumberman with St. Anthony that he soon returned East, wound up his business affairs there, and in 1865 began a residence and business activity in Minneapolis which were only terminated by his death. In connection with his son and Mr. Augustus E. Horr he engaged in the lumber business and bought the sawmill of Todd & Haven. Jonathan Chase was soon admitted to the firm, which went under the name of Leavitt, Chase & Company. In 1876 this partnership was dissolved and a new firm known as Chase, Pillsbury & Company was formed, with Mr. Leavitt, his son and son-in-law, as partners. Three years later was organized the still larger corporation, the Gulf River Lumber Company was formed, with Mr. Leavitt had a holding interest until his death. Mrs. Leavitt died in 1877 and his remaining years were spent with his children and grandchildren. At the time of his death there was a great-grandchild, a son of Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Backus, four years of age. Josiah Leavitt, though more than ordinarily successful as a business man, was devoted to his home, and was proud of his children and particularly of his little great-grandson. Almost until the last he retained the vigor of mind and body which had been his chief asset in the successful accomplishments of his business career. His is one of the name that will always deserve recognition among the pioneer business men of Minnesota.

John Arthur, second son of Alfred and Irene (Miller) Tice, was born June 29, 1859, in Ellenville. He was educated in the public schools of that village, and Wyoming Academy, at Kingston, Pennsylvania. After the completion of his studies, he became em- ployed as a clerk in one of the leading boot and shoe stores of Ellenville, and continued three years in that connection, after which, in 1883, he took the position of clerk in the Ellenville Savings Bank. His faithfulness and efficiency gained promotion in that institution, with which he has continued until the present time, becoming secretary in 1906. He has been active in promoting the interests of the village ; was for many years a member of Scoresby Hose Club, of which he has been sixteen years president. Politically he acts with the Republicans, and is considered one of the most influential and trustworthy men of Ellenville. He affiliates with the Masonic fraternity, being a member of the same lodge with which his father was associated; of Wa- warsing Chapter, No. 246, Royal Arch Masons, of Ellenville, and Rondout Commandery, No. 52, Knights Templar, of Rondout, New York. He married, October 30, 1895, Harriet I. Hoar, born June 10, i860, daughter of George and Harriet (Mason) Hoar, of Ellenville (see Hoar). Mr. and Mrs. Tice are the parents of Roger Du Bois Tice, born July 24, 1903.

William A., son of George and Harriet (Mason) Hoar, was bom at Alligerville, New York, June 3, 1853. He was educated in the public schools of Ellenville, Ulster county, and at the Fort Edward Institute, at Fort Edward, New York, where he took a business course. He soon became connected with the Ellenville Glass Works, and later was made cashier of the First National Bank of Ellenville. In the year 1881 he resigned this position, and a partnership was formed under the firm name of Moore & Hoar, manufacturers of clothing, and jobbers in dry goods, hosiery, notions, and lines kept in country stores. On Mr. Moore's death his son succeeded him and the business is still conducted by Mr. Hoar and Mr. Moore's son, under the firm style and title of Moore & Hoar. The firm does a very extensive business in Ellenville, and the surrounding country, and uses the most approved modern business methods in so far as the village and country gives scope for them. Mr. Hoar is a Republican in politics, though he has never held any public position, his business requiring the greater part of his time and attention. He is a trustee of the Ellenville Savings Bank, and his business interests have other ramifications. He married Mira, daughter of Jonathan and Elizabeth (Wilbur) Terwilliger, of Ellenville, New York.
