7308 | Dr William Hoar Professor Art Department Northern State University Dr. Wm. Hoar was born in New Jersey (USA), 1944. He earned a BA degree from Carthage College (1966), Kenosha, WI, & MA (1974) & PhD (1983) degrees from the University of Iowa, Iowa, Iowa From 1966 to 1968 Hoar was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Ethiopia. He spent 4 years in Taiwan, first as a lay missionary & then as a guest professor. Altogether he has traveled to 22 countries. Hoar has been at Northern State University for 25 years, teaching art history, geography, Chinese history, and Mandarin. The Aberdeen American News Posted on Sun, Sep. 12, 2004 NSU professor mixes appraisal with art Bill Hoar helps find value of library's jar, Britton paintings; Bill Hoar helps find value of library's jar, Britton paintings By Angela Mettler American News Writer Bill Hoar, a professor of geography, history and art history at Northern State University, got a rare chance to satisfy his taste in art and adventure. Pam Lingor, director of the Alexander Mitchell Library, was one of about 10 Aberdonians who registered online for tickets to public television's "Antiques Roadshow" in St. Paul, Minn. She was randomly selected and just happened to have an item of unknown value to be appraised. Hoar, a self-described "art historian and amateur appraiser," had examined the Chinese ceramic storage jar at the library, and based on the Chinese characters painted on the bottom, estimated the jar to be as old as 360 years. "I took a host of digital photographs to the Minneapolis Institute of Arts about four months ago," he said. "The person I talked to there was Dr. Robert Jacobson, director and chief curator of the museum's Oriental collection. Based on my photographs, he said it could be late Qing Dynasty, between 1644 and 1911." Agreed to make trip Lingor asked Hoar if he would take the jar to the "Antiques Roadshow" on June 26 to get an accurate appraisal. Hoar and his wife, Karen, agreed. They also took a set of antique silver butter knives with mother-of-pearl handles, originally given to Hoar's great-aunt in 1870 as a wedding gift. The "Antiques Roadshow" program visited the RiverCentre in St. Paul. The Hoars waited two to three hours to get into the area where the show was taped. Every 90 minutes, 5,000 people were admitted, formed a snaking line, and were directed to a particular area of expertise, such as furniture, paintings or silver. The line for Oriental appraisals was much shorter than the other lines. "Very few people brought Oriental stuff," he said, "so we got the bad news quick." The expert appraiser told them the jar was not made in the Qing Dynasty, but more likely sometime between 1915 and 1940. He estimated the decorative value at about $300. "I was disappointed," Hoar said, "but not surprised, in the sense that I never pretended to be a qualified appraiser." Also worth $300 The silver butter knives were also appraised at $300. Overall, Hoar enjoyed the experience, but has no plans to become an "Antiques Roadshow" roadie. Hoar, 60, is a native of Pleasantville, N.J. He has been at NSU since 1977. He is also the university's gallery director. Hoar's art proficiency was put to use at the Marshall County Courthouse in Britton. On June 24, he examined the four large paintings in the courthouse's cupola to decide if they should be restored. He found that the paintings are signed by Will Peaco, a muralist who worked in Peoria, Illinois., and Fort Wayne, Ind., and dated 1908. The paintings portray cattle, buffalo, hunting and harvesting. "For the age of the paintings, they are remarkably clean and in mostly good physical condition," he said. "They are handsomely done and are of considerable historical value." Detects authenticity As an art history professor, he teaches "the evolution of style and the visual arts, and its relationship with culture." Hoar said because of his art knowledge, people sometimes come to his office and ask his opinion on an object they think may be of value. "I'm not an expert in appraisal, but I can detect authenticity," he said. | Hoar, Dr. William (I3023)

7318 | Ebenezer Rockwood Hoar was born in 1816 in Concord, Massachusetts. He graduated from Harvard College in 1835, received a law degree from Harvard Law School in 1939, and pursued politics, first as a Whig, then as a member of the abolitionist Free Soil Party, and finally as a Republican. From 1849 to 1855, Hoar served as judge of common pleas in Massachusetts, and from 1859 to 1869, as associate justice on the Massachusetts Supreme Court. He then became the first of President Ulysses S. Grant's five attorney generals. During his time in office, Hoar witnessed the transition of the Office of Attorney General to the Department of Justice. In 1869, President Grant nominated Hoar to a seat on the United States Supreme Court, but the Senate did not confirm him. As a result, Hoar resigned from Grant's cabinet in 1870, though he continued to serve the President as a member of a special commission. Hoar won election to the House of Representatives in 1872 but failed in a second bid in 1876. He then retired from politics and resumed his law practice. Ebenezer Rockwood Hoar died in 1895. 7327 | Ellen was living with her mother and step-father in the 1870 census. Marriage: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/VF3J-152 [[ from prtbrown190@comcast.net toRoz Edson date Thu, Aug 21, 2008 at 11:41 AM subject Re: Hoar, Cassada, Hawk Hi Roz, To answer your question: "For my records, please, who was Ellen married to in the 1900 census?" Ellen was married to John Henry Rankin about 1887. In the 1880 census, she is still living with George and Margaret Cassidy. By the 1900 census, this record indicates that John and Ellen had been married for 13 years and there are no children. The 1910 census shows John married to Amanda Varndell and they were my great-grandparents. As I recall, they were married about 1903. It was a real surprise to learn that John had been married before. My aunt remembers hearing something about a previous marriage when she was little, but she never knew her grandfather and no one either knew who John had been married to or talked about it. John's parents were Alexander and Nancy (Hart) Rankin. When you look through the years at Wharton Twp, Fayette County, PA census records, I'm sure all these family knew each other and obviously lived in close proximity to one another. I'm still amazed at having found info on Ellen. With the various race designations and such a common surname as Cassidy, I was hitting a lot of brick walls. Finding your info has been really helpful. At least now Ellen will not be lost in history. Pam B. | Hoar, Ellen (I22306)

NASHVILLE, Tenn., Nov. 16.? Four cattle drovers went to the house of Joe Reagan in Henderson county last week to collect money due them. Reagan claimed he could not pay and asked the men to give him more time. They refused and told him if he didn't pay at once they would levy on his cattle. This angered Reagan and he determined upon a plan to square the debt and get revenge. He invited the four men to remain to supper and during the meal brought in some white corn whisky,of which all partook. The debauch continued far into the night and one by one the men fell over into a sleep from which three of them never awakened. They had been poisoned. When found Jack Baker, John Horr and Sam Wilson were dead and William Hagelin was uaconscious, but was revived. Reagan is under arrest. He is considered to be partially insane. | Horr, John (I58272)

7338 | Email from Kathleen. Email address: K2outside(at)hotmail.com I have a photograph of his tombstone in St. Mary's Cemetery in Oregon, Ogle, Illinois It is from those headstones I have death years for Ellen (actually Mary Ellen), James Sr., James Jr., Patrick, Jerry and Kathryn (which is how it is spelled on the tombstone). Ellen is listed as a widow in the 1910 census. She is also listed as having 5 children, 4 of whom are living. That matches my information perfectly, since Jerry had died some eight years earlier. It also confirms that James Jr. is not her son. As to all the rest, residue and remainder of my estate of what nature, kind and quality the same may be, I give, devise and bequeath the same to my beloved wife Catherine during her natural life, or widowhood, and after her decease or remarriage I give and bequeath unto my daughter Mary, the widow of John Van Arsdalen deceased the sum of fifty dollars, and to the two sons of my daughter Elizabeth deceased, David and John Schamp, the like sum of fifty dollars, to be equally divided between them, which two legacies of fifty dollars each are to be paid within six months after the decease of my said wife Catherine or her remarraige, and after the payment of the said two legacies, I give and bequeath the remainder unto my daughters Phebe and Sarah, and to my son James to be equally divided between them share and share alike. And whereas I have heretofore made such provision for the children of my first wife as my circumstance would warrant, I do therefore bequeath nothing unto them. Lastly I do nominate, constitute and appoint my beloved wife Catherine, and my friend William Ditmars executrix and excutor of this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all former wills and testaments by me made, and declaring this to be my true and only last will and testament. In witness whereof the said William Spader hath hereunto set his hand and seal the Ninth day of May in the year of our LORD eighteen hundred and fifteen. I suspect Marryja HUFF is the parent of Bergun for a couple of reasons, 1) she appears to be the right age to be his mother (20 years), 2) Supposedly she married a William Spader, 3) her father's name is Bergon, 4) of the 3 siblings of hers with children [I can find], 2 have a child named Bergon (Bergen), 5) The Dubois, Marryja HUFF's family lived in the area (Elizabeth Rynearson and Bergun Spader would be 1st cousins, icky I know, but it happened a lot back then), 6) Marryja could be reasonably interpreted by a non-family member, a century later as Mary. 32 William Spader. Lucy Allen, wife of Hiram Horr, is a daughter of Josiah Allen and Olive Negus of New York. Lucy's parents (Josiah Allen and Olive Negus) were in Pompey, Onondaga County, New York when Lucy was born. Lucy signed as witness on a deed for her mother as Lucy Hoar in Fabius, Onondaga County, New York. Her mother was Olive Babcock (remarried) at the time. Lucy Allen and Hiram Hoar were married by 1830. I have a copy of a deed for heirs of Josiah Allen in LaFayette, Onondaga County, New York, formerly Pompey, with Lucy Allen as an heir 1828 not yet married. Lucy Allen is also listed as a member of Fabius Baptist Church as having married a Hoar.
