20763 | Marriage to Ethel: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/KDMP-ZNX [[Legend Hills Orchard History Legend Hills Orchard is owned and operated by Dick Hoar and his four children and their families. Over the past 40 years, the business has grown from a grocery route to a large retail farm market. In 1925, Dick's father, Harry Hoar, began planting apple and peach trees. He marketed the fruit at various fruit stands in Licking County. Harry retired in 1947, and Dick, at age 17, took over management of the orchard and established a grocery route in Newark, Mt. Vernon, and surrounding communities. In 1955, Dick and his wife Jane purchased a 42-acre farm adjacent to the original orchard which they later purchased from Harry. Dick and Jane along with their four children planted apple, peach, and cherry trees and built a retail business, "Pine Lake Orchard," three miles south of Utica in Licking County. In the beginning, the family sold produce out of their garage. Dick and Jane purchased the former "Reynold's Orchard," which is now Legend Hills Orchard, in 1972. Over the next few years the family consisting of Dick and Jane, daughters; Susan and Debbie, and sons; Rick and Doug, renovated Legend Hills and operated both markets. Then, in 1979, to accommodate a growing retail business, the family built a farm market salesroom at Legend Hills because of its proximity to State Routes 62 and 13. Sadly in July, 2001, Dick's wife, Jane, of 48 years passed away. The family welcomes Dick's new wife, Carol (September, 2003). At Legend Hills today, apples, peaches, and strawberries are grown with a major emphasis on apples and peaches. There are approximately 60 acres of apples, 40 acres of peaches, and 5 acres of strawberries. Because Legend Hills Orchard is primarily a retail market, approximately 25 varieties of apples and 20 varieties of peaches are grown. In the 1980's, despite hard winters, Legend Hills continued to plant peaches as is the practice today, due to high customer demand and successful peach production on rolling hills. Approximately 90% of all fruit raised is sold through the Legend Hills Farm Market. A large portion of apples, peaches, and strawberries are sold pick-your-own. Legend Hills also presses and markets its own fresh apple cider. The market is open year round with extended hours during the harvest season. | Hoar, Richard (I32356)

Benjamin R. Horr, driver of the stage that crashed into the overland limited train at Dixon Friday, killing seven, and who died in a Woodland hospital from his injuries Friday night, formally lived in Modesto. He had been a resident here for many years. With his family he left here on August 9, last. Horr's body will arrive in Modesto Sunday night from Woodland. Interment will be in a Modesto cemetery. Obituary: Modesto News Herald (Newspaper - California) Oct 4, 1926 (Mentions wife Anita, daughter Patricia, siblings Mrs. Edna Roberson, Mrs. Claude Forest, and E. D. Horr; siblings all of Palo Alto, Ca.) http://www.cagenweb.com/archives/Obituaries/Stanislaus/1926Obits_b.htm Horr, Roy 261008 p1 Driver in Dixon Stage Wreck Lived Here; ..??... that was crushed by the Overland Limited last week at Dixon, was a former Pattersonite, having resided here about 1920. He was known as Roy Horr here, being a son of Ben Horr and a nephew of Al and Henry B Horr, the latter two being local residents still. The crash, one of the most terrible in the history of stage transportation in this state, was the result of a most unusual combination of events. The crossing was guarded by gates but as they were being lowered for the passage of the limited, a car skidded in the rain and it was partially raised to allow the driver to bet back again. Just then the stage came up and went directly into the path of the train. Conflicting testimony disagrees as to whether Horr make the required stop before starting across, but most witnesses declare he did not. Nine of the ten occupants were killed outright or fatally injured, including Horr. A brother-in-law of Horr, the husband of the former Belva Horr, was killed several months ago in another auto accident at the Bay.
