RICE, the diver who recovered the body of "Bill" HOAR from the bottom of the reservoir at Boonton, N.J. died on Monday at his home, 455 Fifty-fifth street, Bay Ridge. The cause of his death was neuralgia of the heart. His death recalls the efforts which were made to rescue HOAR from his perilous position at the Boonton Reservoir. While fixing a leak in the reservoir HOAR was caught in a valve and was under a terrible pressure of water, alive, for more than thirty-six hours. In April, 1904, Mr. RICE was appointed a diver in the Dock Department, in place of HOAR. Previous to this he had been for more than fifteen years a machinist and pressman on the New York "World". Mr. RICE considered Friday a lucky day. He started off by being born on a Friday, and the first step of his adventurous career began on a Friday, when he went up in a balloon at a country fair up- State. It was on a Friday that he made his first attempt as a diver. At that time of the Slocum disaster he recovererd fifteen bodies. His know- ledge of machinery made him the kind of diver so often needed in setting aright pieces of machanism that go wrong under the water. He leaves a widow and three children. Mrs. Fanny Haughton, widow of Wm. B. Haughton, formerly of this town, died at Red Wing, Minn., on the 29th ult., in the 85th year of her age. Mrs. Haughton was a native of Massachusetts, but came to this county in early life? her father being the late Dea. Enos Hoard of Stockbridge. About forty years ago her family came to this village, and subsequently removed to Chicago. In 1867 Mrs. Haughton went to Red Wing to reside with her eldest daughter, widow of the late Read A. Williams, formerly of this village. All who have known her (says the Red Wing Sun) testify most warmly to the nobleness of Her character, the marked traits of which were thoroughness and sincerity. Cheerful thankfulness born of a deep Christian experience made her old age a benediction to all who knew her. Such a life as Mrs. Haughton's is the greatest of family treasures and a lasting blessing to the world. [[ Had she died Sep 14, 1838 Morrisville NY | Hoard, Fanny (I39086)
