Trim, Rehoboth, MA A Private Revolutionary War Bi-centennial Project. Page 1 - A note of explanation. At the timed of the compiling of the enclosed list of veterans of the American Revolution, there was located in present day Rehoboth, some 52 public and family cemeteries, of which only about 2- contain the remains of such veterans. The references used to determine the eligibility of these veterans to be classified as such are from numerous sources, mainly from the 17 volumes of the Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors of the American Revolution, (Mass); as well as from Colwell's, Spirit of 76", which lists those who served in Rhode Island; the other abbreviations used in the reference column are as follows, (DAR) Daughters of the American Revolution, both their lineage books, and their Patriot Index; (N.P.) indicating that an obituary appeared in some issue of the many newspapers of the years during, and following the American Revolution; and (Marker) which indicates that the gravestone of the veteran so mentions that he served in the armed forces of his country. The name of the Rev. Robert Rogerson is also listed, as having given public service. The page number given in the last column refers to the page in the "Gravestones of Rehoboth; by Robert Trim - copies which are located in the Town Clerks office in Rehoboth, at the RI Hist. Soc. 19976 | James D. Sutton. There are few more representative citizens to be found in Tuscola County, than this gentleman who portrait appears on the opposite page and whose farm is one of the finest within the limits of Almer Township. It was purchased by him in December, 1890, and comprises two hundred and one acres of land, highly fertile and well cultivated. Upon the estate may be notice a conveniently arranged and comfortable residence, good barns and the necessary machinery for carrying on the farm. The career of Mr. Sutton has been signalized by arduous toil, and his present prosperity in the just reward of years of effort. Mr. Sutton traces his ancestry to England, where his grandfather Benjamin Sutton, was born and whence he emigrated to the United States prior to the War of 1812, in which he served. He pursued the calling of a farmer in New York, where he died. The names of his children were as follows: Thomas, Thomas (second), Abram, Nehemiah, Jacob, Benjamin, Jr., Hiram, Byron, Ira, James, Daniel, William, Nathaniel, Luther, Polly and Lucretia. The father of our subject was Nehemiah Sutton, a native of New York and a shoemaker by trade. In his early manhood he married Ellen Settle, a native of New York, and they became the parents of eleven children, namely: Jacob V., Hiram, Martha, Margaret, Henry, Ellen, James D., Charles H., Jane A., Rachel M., and Jemima. The political belief of Nehemiah Sutton led him into affiliation with the Democratic party. Accompanied by his family, he removed about 1836 from New York to Munson Township, Geauga County, Ohio, and also lived for a short time in Van Buren County, this State. He went to Texas on a visit and there died at the age of sixty-six years. His wife survived him until the fall of 1876, when she died in Tuscola County, this State, at the age of seventy-eight years. She was an estimable woman, whose worth of character found high appreciation in the various communities where she resided. James D. Sutton was born August 23, 1833, in Franklin County, N.Y., and received his education in the common schools and in Chester (Ohio) Seminary. When eleven years old he started out in life for himself and for two years remained in the employ of a merchant in Wyandotte County, Ohio. When fourteen years of age he received $9 per month, working in the summer and attending school in the winter. In September, 1853, he came to Michigan, the journey westward being made from Cleveland to Detroit by water, by rail to Pontiac, thence by stage to Flint, and taking Walker's line into Indianfields Township, Tuscola County. His first purchase of land comprised one hundred and twenty acres on section 12, Almer Township, and to that property he removed in 1855. After clearing and improving the place he added thereto forty acres which he also improved. In March, 1883, he moved to Caro where he resided until December, 1890, and then came to the place where he now lives. For twenty-one years Mr. Sutton has been Superintendent of the Poor of the county, and has filled this responsible position satisfactorily. He is a Republican in politics and has served in various offices in the township. Socially he is a leading Mason and belongs to the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. April 19, 1855, Mr. Sutton was married to Miss Eliza A Ingraham, who was born in New York and was the daughter of Luther and Maryette (Horr) Ingraham, early settlers in Oakland County. By this marriage our subject became the father of five children - Amelia, Rachel, James I., Lovina and Lovisa. Mrs. Eliza Sutton died December 23, 1880, and two years later our subject was married to Martha M., daughter of William and Martha E. (McDavid) Burlingame, of Fair Grove. Two children have blessed their union - Ralph and Charles. Mrs. Sutton and the other members of the family belong to the Methodist Episcopal Church. | Sutton, James D. (I15638)

20000 | June 2008 Information on this family was kindly contributed by Clark W., grandson of Clara. Email address: clark(at)brittonsd.com http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=marshallcounty&id=I19901 M. Neff, 92, Britton, died Tuesday, July 2, 2002, at her home. A memorial service will be held Monday, July 8, at 10:30 a. m. at the United Methodist Church in Britton. Pastor Tim Vorlage will officiate. Clara Mabel Stiles was born Sept. 5, 1909, at St. Paul, MN, to Frederick and Clara (Goebel) Stiles. Her mother died at her birth, and Clara spent her childhood with her maternal grandparents in St. Paul and summers in Britton with her father, who ran a hardware store at the time. She married Moritz E. Wismer June 23, 1930, in St. Paul. Together they ran the family lumber yard in Britton where she kept the business books until he died in 1963. After his death she built apartments and a house in Britton. While in Britton Clara was a member of the Britton Study Club, Home Garden Club, and Rebecca Lodge. She worked for the Red Cross during World War II, and also as a nurse's aid at the Britton Hospital. She was active in the Methodist Church, teaching Sunday School, as a pianist for church services, and in the Methodist Women's Society. In 1965 she moved to Arizona. She married Roger Neff of Indiana in Tucson, AZ, in 1966. They lived in Tucson and Show Low, and enjoyed square dancing and traveling across the country in their motor home for many years. They returned to Bloomington, IN, in 1995 and then to Britton in 1996 and lived at Spruce Court for a time. Roger died May 23, 2000. At the time of her death she was living in her own home with the assistance of Velda Bukaske, Elaine Juelfs, and Gloria Krutsinger. She enjoyed researching and recording family history, doing craft projects in crocheting and other mediums, collecting postage stamps, corresponding with friends and relatives, and, in the last year, keeping up with the outside world via the Internet. She is survived by two sons, Richard (Elaine Bandt) Wismer and Charles (Colleen Sieverts) Wismer, Britton; three step-children, 13 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husbands, parents, and one step-granddaughter. | Stiles, Clara Mabel (I30016)
