Hore of Pole Hore

The 1235 Surrey Eyre, VOL 2, p. 178

“CHANU, JOHN le. Members of the le Chanu family occur prominently as witnesses after the earls of Clare in late 12th century grants to Tonbridge priory and in other Kent Deeds (Bodleian Library Kent Charters, nos. 1, 4, 7, 180). Their principal estate was at Bidborough, near Tonbridge, where the family continued for many years. John also held of the Gloucester fee, through the Danmartins, ¼ fee in East Bockingford, in Brenchley, and ½ and ¼ fee at Yalding; but in 1242-3 these estates all had sub-tenants (Fees, 663, 671-2). Since Ralph de Pimpe, a prominent knightly tenant of the Danmartins, held a fee at East Bockingfold (ibid., 663), and it was from Ralph and his wife Rose that John received a carucate at Tytling as the marriage portion of his wife Katherine, whose mother’s name is known to have been Rose (note 105), it seems likely that Katherine was Ralph’s daughter.  In Sussex John and Katherine on 7 May 1234 released their interests in 18 acres in Willingdon and on 20 Nov. 1235, in the Sussex eyre, concorded a grand assize whereby John Gulafre admitted their right to 8 acres at Eastbourne (Sussex Fines 1190-1249, nos 278, 314). These interests, like Tyting, came to Katherine through her de Normanvill descent (note 105). As Sir John Chanu or Canutus, John was first witness to several Tonbridge priory deeds (Bodleian Library Kent Charters, nos 29, 30a, 33, 43-4); he witnessed also, 5/11,6/10, Tandridge deeds (H.M.C., Various Collections, IV, 328-9; Minet 3610).”

Insolvent, being questioned by Mr. S. C. Brown on behalf of creditors, deposed that he had never seen his mother’s marriage settlement, nor any copy of it; his evidence regarding it was based on information received in Sydney; a document was sent out for him and his brother to sign; he signed it; he had a copy of the deed produced, which he had given over to the official assignee; he had a letter in his hand from Lucas and Son, the solicitors in London; that letter was addressed to his brother; it was received about the same time as the deed; his brother left the letter with him when he went to England, about May last; his younger brother was not of age. No directions were given, and the meeting terminated.”
