perhaps be included in the foregoing valuations.) Also of the Manor of
Combehall alias West Clifford in the p’sh of Drewsteignton, which had belonged to
John Carewe de Haccombe, Ar, who by his will 20 Ap. 21 Jas. I devised it to
John Hore and to Thos. Gregory of Plympton Maire, gent, in trust, to certain

“Hore’s
Gift. Thomas Hore, by his will,
bearing date 14th May, 1746, gave to the poor persons of the parish of
Spreyton, a yearly rent-charge of twenty shillings, for ever, to be payable out
of his messuage and tenement, called West Bigbear, situate in Spreyton, to the
vicar, churchwardens and overseers of the poor there, for the time being, and
by them to be distributed on every Christmas-day, to such poor persons as had

parishioners, holden about Lady-day for passing the parish accounts, together

varying from 9d. to 2s. according to their respective necessities.”

145/EN 1/1/2 Letter from Charles HORE to [Charles?] BAWDES
Acknowledges receipt of a letter in which
Bawdes says that he is surprised that Hore should tell Sir Will[iam Buck?] that
Bawdes never saw the Solicitor General; Bawdes might write to Sir William if
Hore advised it, Bawdes having seen and read the Bill twice, to explain how he
could be of the opinion that Hore's estate was chargeable with 150 [pounds] yearly
during his lifetime "when it is nothing like that sum"; it is worth
40 pounds per annum, but 1,000 pounds of it is in the hands of Lord Herbert who
is responsible for the payment on that portion; Bawdes advises the sale of part
of the estate reserved for Hore, his wife and children to discharge the 3,000
pounds which is chargeable on that part and let Lord Herbert pay on the
"contingencies"; is this is Bawdes' opinion, Hore differs from it;
the estate may be sold for the payment of 3,000 pounds when it becomes due,
which will not be until his own death and not then if his daughter is not aged
eighteen or married; besides it will mean selling an estate and lending money
to Lord Herbert, under the proviso that in case his daughter should die before
him or before she has reached the age of eighteen or has married, Lord Herbert
is to repay him the money; it would be safer to pay the money when payable than
lodge so much money in any lord's hands in the kingdom, for it may be more
difficult to get the money with the interest from him than it may be to raise
the money if it should ever [illegible]; besides there is only forty pounds to
be paid to his daughter during his life; how must the [illegible] of
3,000 pounds be applied?; if to Hore's use,
how should Bawdes advise him to recover it?; on the whole that method is of no
advantage; Hore hopes that when Bawdes seriously considers it without
partiality, he and "all other people else" who have seen the Bill
must confess that it is the only thing [which] can be of any advantage to his
wife[P.S.] Sir William need not question Mr. Marshall while the Bill is
[illegible] or bother him on any account, his attendance being required in
Parliament; "so I can go about my concerns without any danger"Note.
The letter is addressed "To Councellour Bawdes att Summerby near Grantham
Lincolnshire"

“HOAR (HORE) FAMILY – HODGES – PERRY – PORTER – HARRINGTON
SIXTH GENERATION
According to Lyon J. Hoard of San Jose, Calif., in Oct.
1978, “There is considerable evidence to show beyond doubt that this family is
a branch of the Hore family seated at the manor of Risford/Rushford, Chagford
Paris [sic], Devonshire, since 1349.
Further research in the English records is expected to establish this important
connection. Records confirm the family’s gentry, social and economic standing.”
This, and the following four generations of the Hore (Hoar) family in England
was found in a file in the Historical library at Taunton, Mass.
THE ENGLISH HOAR

Thomas,” leasee in reversion to his father of the St. George ale-house, Axminster, etc.

1515-16). Wife
unknown, but had daughter Elianor named in father's deed 1579, and manoral
surveys of 1581 (age 30), and 1588 (age 34, then wife of Thomas Turner), and daughter
JOHAN, named in father’s deed 1579 and in manoral surveys of 1581
(age 24) and 1588 (age 31).
RICHARD HORE
(Thomas), was born in England ca 1509 and died at Musbury parish, Devon,
between 10 Dec. 1569 and 11 Feb. 1569/7. He married MARRIAN — , a widow, who died
by 1561.
1. Roger
Hore, of Axminster, was named in his father’s will of 1569/70, held manor of
Prestaller in Axminster and leasee of the Rectory and advowson of Axminster and

[9] Shown as the father
of William Hore (living 1524/9) in the Visitation
of Devon.
[10] This Robert is
omitted from the Hore of Chagford pedigree in the Visitation of Devon. He occurs under Chagford in the Devon Subsidy
Roll of 1524/5, where he was rated at £40 of goods. However he does not appear
in the Subsidy Roll of 1526/7, where we find William Hore of Chagford rated at
£80 of goods. Robert was clearly the head of the family in 1524, though whether
he was the father or elder brother of William who was head of the family in
1527 is uncertain. I believe that he was his father, as there are too few
generations between the William who is attested by contemporary evidence as
holding a third of Risford in 1428 and the William who held Risford in 1524 and
1529.

[72] There do not appear to
be any surviving baptism records in the Chagford Parish Register between the
years 1693 and 1702. Alumni Cantabrigienses, VOL I, p. 380, states that a William
“Hore or Hare” was admitted to Trinity aged 17 on 26 July 1715 and that he was
the son of “William, of Chagford, Devon”. I believe this is a mistake for
Charles Hore, of Chagford. The son William is also identified as the Rector of Bow
Brickhill, Bucks., 1722-42 and of Tingrith, Beds., 1724-42. However, Alumni Oxonienses, p. 745 states that it
was William Hore, son of Bernard Hore of Kintbury, Berks., who was Rector of
those places at those times and that he had previously been Rector of Weston-in-Gordano,
Somerset in 1716. I believe that Alumni
Oxonienses is in error here, as it was Charles Hore, of Chagford’s
brother-in-law Sir Charles Buck, 3rd Bt who held the advowson of Bow Brickhill.
Charles Hore and William Hore also occur together in National Archives C

original record (ancestry.com). The parish register at Little Brickhill records
that banns were read there on 4 and 11 November 1787, for the marriage of James Hore and Ann Cole Parker, of
Ridgmont, Bedfordshire. This appears to be in error. Yet on 20 April 1789 the baptism of Charles Hore, son of James Hore and Ann is recorded. This
indicates that the marriage record in Ridgmont is in error (and that Charles was written where James was intended).

[153] A Charles Hore can be
found living at Sheerness in the 1841, 1851 and 1861 Census. In the 1851 Census
his place of birth is said to be “Little Bittle” in Buckinghamshire (no such
place exists, it seems probable that the census taker misheard the place name).
In the 1861 Census his place of birth is said to be “Buckell” in
Buckinghamshire. Again, no such place exists and it seems probable that Little
Brickhill is intended. The Charles Hore whose son Charles was born at the
Garrison of Sheerness in 1819 is described as a ‘lamp lighter’ in the baptism
record.

[196] Daniel Hore left “my
sister Cogan” an annuity in his will of 1762. Their marriage allegation (dated
13 Dec 1734) states that Thomas Cogan was “of the parish of St. Peter Cornhill
London Batchelor aged twenty four years” while Mary Hore is said to be “of the
parish of St. Clement Danes in the county of Middlesex spinster aged twenty one
years”, which would place her year of birth around 1713. This is a significant
discrepancy though it is possible that she lied about her age.
[197] She does not seem to
have left issue. Her husband married second at St Mary, Islington 3 January
1764 Philadelphia Stephens, and had 2 sons (Charles Hore Cogan, William White
Cogan) and 1 daughter (Philadelphia):

“Bartholomew Hore (fl. 1623)… Spicer’s liminary poem was followed by one “on
this Vocabulary of his good friend, Master Henry Cockeram of Exeter”, signed by
Bartholomew Hore, evidently a cadet of the well-established family of Hore of
Rushford near Chagford, seventeen miles west of Exeter and about seven miles
from the Fords at Ilsington. He is probably to be identified with the
Bartholomew Hore who signed a letter in support of Thomas Spicer during the
Exeter schooling controversy of 1623-1624 (HMC
Exeter 1916, 145).”
