[1] A Copy of Papers Relating to Musters, Beacons, Subsidies, Etc. in the County of Northampton, A.D. 1586-1623, p. 46, ed. by John Wake (1926). A “Tho: Hore” appears in the 1591 Muster under Greens Norton, but it may equally refer to Thomas (b. 1568), son of William Hoare, or his first cousin Thomas (b. 1569), son of John Hoare. The Thomas Hoare of the muster roll appears to have settled in North Crawley, Buckinghamshire, where he had a daughter Grace baptised on 24 February 1607/8. Henry Hoare (later of Walton, grandfather of the banker Sir Richard Hoare) had 7 children baptised at North Crawley between 1614 and 1628. It appears therefore that Henry was the son of this Thomas.

[3] Henry and his family moved to Walton shortly before the birth of his youngest child Thomas, who was baptised there on 24 July 1631. DNA testing confirms that Henry was a descendant (chronologically he must have been a great-grandson) of Thomas Hoare, of Greens Norton (d. 1573).

[4] Henry had his first child in 1614 and his supposed father Thomas was born in either 1568 or 1569. If I am correct that Henry was the son of Thomas then Henry must have been born in about 1590-1595.

Cecily was buried in the chancel, supporting the theory that the unknown Hoare who was buried in the chancel on 5 January 1669/70 was her husband Henry Hoare. [37] The Buckinghamshire Family History Society provided me with a transcription of this marriage record. Alice’s name is clearly transcribed as “Alice Hoare of Walton” but her husband’s name is transcribed as “Lee?  FEILD of Sandford? Bedfordshire” and may not have been correctly transcribed.

[65] Henry Hoare of St Botolph bequeathed “five pounds apiece” to “the children of my brother William Trebble”. Elsewhere in his will, Henry refers to his brother-in-law Joseph Brinklow as his “brother”, which indicates that Henry meant brother-in-law when referring to William Trebble as his brother. William Trebble may have been the husband of an otherwise unknown sister of Henry, or perhaps more likely the brother or brother-in-law of Henry’s wife Cicely.
