“A potter named John Hoare was buried at Potterspury in 1680. He was no doubt related to Robert Hoare of Yardley Gobion, who died in 1744, leaving a daughter Abigail, the wife of Thomas Woodward of Yardley, who died in 1756, when he described himself as a potter and left his house and (apart from 1s. to each of his children) all his personalty to his widow. Mrs. Woodward died in 1764, leaving a guinea to each of four surviving sons, a daughter-in-law who had been married to a deceased son, and two daughters, but the residue, including her house, was bequeathed to her son Robert Woodward. He was presumably identical with the 'Robin Woodward, Yardley Gobion' whose name appears on an earthenware jug dated 1761. Robert Woodward was still living in Yardley in 1776  and it seems likely that his family and the Hoares before them operated a kiln there for at least a hundred years. An Edward Woodward helped to appraise Leonard Benton's inventory in 1665, but this may be a coincidence. Similarly, one of four cottages in Yardley Gobion acquired by Thomas Horton in 1749 from the successors of a family named Brown, who were the owners from at least 1672, was known as 'ye Potters' and was then occupied by Thomas Hoare.”

[1] Named in her husband’s will.

[2] Will of Thomas Hore of Norton Davy proved 1526.

http://www.medievalgenealogy.org.uk/subsidies/transcripts/greensnorton16c.shtml

William Hore was taxed at 11 shillings.

[4] Named in his father’s will.

[5] Greens Norton Manor Court Roll SC2/195/28, Norton Davy: View of Frankpledge and Court Baron, held 10 May 1546:

The name of Thomas Hore appears in a list of jurors. There follows this entry (translated from Latin):

“And [they say on oath] that William Hore, who held of the lord one tenement, with two virgates of land with appurtenances lying below that tenement, by virtue of an annual rent of 6s. 8d., attendance at court, and heriot, when they arise, has died. Hence, there falls due to the lord for rent 6s. 8d., and for heriot one horse of the value of 30s..  Hence, the aforesaid bailiff is ordered to distrain on account of the aforesaid rent and to take possession of the aforesaid heriot.  And [they say on oath] that a certain Thomas Hore is his nearest heir and that he is forty years of age.”

[6] Named in his father’s will.

[10] Thomas Hoare (d. 1573) mentions his children (and some grandchildren) in his will. However, he does not give the order of seniority, only explicity referring to his son James as his youngest son.

[11] Presumed to be a younger son of Thomas Hore (d. 1573).

[12] William’s burial record states that he was husband of Catherine.

[33] No baptism record survives for Edmund Hoare. Presumably when the pedigree of Hoare of Annabella was prepared for Burke’s Peerage and Baronetage (1970) the editor made use of the will of John Hoare (d. 1613), which was formerly held by the Northamptonshire Archives. However, when I requested a scan of the will in 2013 I was told that it had disappeared.

[34] Scan of original record (ancestry.com); the register has not entries for 1598 and this is the only entry in 1599. I think the intended year is 1598/9 but cannot be certain. Edmund Hoare appointed his “sone in lawe Abraham Roe” one of the overseers of his will, which suggests that Elizabeth Rowe had a son named Abraham by a previous husband with the surname Rowe.

[35] Scan of original record (ancestry.com), “Elzabeth Hoare late wife of Edmunde Hoare was buryed…”

[36] Mentioned in her father Edmund’s will.

[37] Mentioned in her father Edmund’s will.

[38] She is identified as Mary Elliott, daughter of Robert Elliott of Greens Norton in Burke’s Peerage and Baronetage (1970). Presumably the will of Robert Elliott proves this link, but I have not seen it. Certainly Edmund Hoare refers to his “brother in lawe John Ellyott” in his will of 1634.

[39] Scan of original record (ancestry.com)

[40] Scan of original record (ancestry.com); he was buried as Edward Hoare, “Edward Hoare was buried…” however the next burial in the register is of his younger brother Robert Hoare and underneath is a note that “These two Edmond & Robert weare both buryed at one tyme, weare carryed to the church together”

[41] Scan of original record (ancestry.com)

[42] Scan of original record (ancestry.com); “Alis Hoare was buryed in wolen”. It is also possible that this refers to Alice, daughter of John and Alice Hoare (see her footnote).

[43] Scan of original record (ancestry.com)

[44] The baptism record of John and Anne’s daughter Mary specifies that John was the “son of Edward” (meaning Edmund) and the baptism record of their daughter Frances specifies that John was the “son of Edmund”. John must therefore be the unnamed “heir” (i.e. oldest son) who is referred to, though not specifically named, in the will of Edmund Hoare. Besides leaving bequests for his daughters by his first wife, and for his daughters and younger sons by his second wife, Edmund left his wife Mary “all my said Mesuage lands ten[emen]ts and heredytam[en]ts in Greens Norton aforesaid nowe in my owne use and possession To have and to holde the same to her and her assignes until my heire shall accomplish the full age of twenty fower yeres”. Edmund wrote his will on 15 April 1634, when his son and heir John would have been aged 14.

[45] Scan of original record (ancestry.com); the register specifies that she was “the wife of John Hoare (sonne of Edmund)”

[46] Scan of original record (ancestry.com); the register states that he was “buryed in woolon”. See also, Northamptonshire Administrations of the Archdeaconry of Northampton 1677-1830, “Hoare, John, of Greens Norton, gent., lately deceased. Invent. £877 11s. 4d. taken 27 Mar 1684 by Wm Hoare, Wm Kirkham, Will. Elliott. Exhib. 29 Mar 1684 and Edward Hoare, exor., sworn. (169)”

[47] Scan of original record (ancestry.com)

[48] Mentioned in the will of her father John.

[49] Scan of original record (ancestry.com); the register specifies that he was “borne” on that date “about 3 of the clocke in the morninge", but does not say when he was baptised.

[50] Scan of original record (ancestry.com)

[51] Scan of original record (ancestry.com); the register calls him “Mr Edward Hoar”.

[52] Scan of original record (ancestry.com)

[53] Scan of original record (ancestry.com); the register does not name his parents. However, his father Edward (son of John) was apparently still alive in 1706 when he took an inventory of the goods of Edward Elliott of Greens Norton (see Northamptonshire Administrations of the Archdeaconry of Northampton 1677-1830).

[58] Burke’s Landed Gentry (1847), p. 828, her descendants were of Cosgrove Hall.

[59] Scan of original record (ancestry.com); the register specifies that she was “borne” on that date, but does not say when she was baptised.

[60] Mentioned in the will of his father John.

[61] Scan of original record (ancestry.com); the entry in the register is as follows, “Francis Hoare the daughter of John Hoare (sonne of Edmund) & of Ann his wife was borne february ye 11th”. No year is given, but the preceding entry is for a birth on 11 March 1658 (which could mean either 1657/8 or 1658/9) and the next entry is for a birth in April 1659. It appears that Frances was born on 11 February 1658/9.

[62] Mentioned in the will of his father John.

[63] Scan of original record (ancestry.com); the register specifies that she was “borne” on that date “about 3 o clock in the afternoone", but does not say when she was baptised.

[64] Mentioned in the will of his father John.

[65] Scan of original record (ancestry.com); the register specifies that he was “borne” on that date, but does not say when he was baptised.

[66] Mentioned in the will of his father John.

[67] Mentioned in the will of her husband John Hoare of Northampton (d. 1699)

[68] He wrote his will in June 1699; it was proved in December 1699.

[69] Scan of original record (ancestry.com)

[70] Scan of original record (ancestry.com); despite the gap of 12 years between the baptism of his brother John (1664) and this Thomas (1676), the register specifies that Thomas was “sonne of John Hoare (sonne of Edmund) and Anne his wife”.

[85] Scan of original record (ancestry.com); “old John Hoare was buryed…”. The will of John Hore (2nd Series, Book T, fol. 212) was formerly held by the Northamptonshire Archives and appears to have been available when the pedigree of Hoare of Annabella was prepared for Burke’s Peerage and Baronetage (1970). However, when I requested a scan of the will I was told that it had disappeared: Archivist Archivist@northamptonshire.gov.uk Thu 16/02/2012 15:55

“…I have been unable to locate the following record:

N will, John Hore, Greens Norton, 2nd series, Book T, Folio 212. This will is present in neither the microfilmed copy nor the original will volume. Folio 212 would have appeared at the very back of the volume.  It does, however, feature in the calendar, as you rightly point out. This calendar was compiled from contemporary indices so it seems likely that between the time the original index was compiled [1888], and the wills bound, the last folios of the volume were lost, or considered beyond repair.”

[86] Scan of original record (ancestry.com); the baptism record does not name James’ father, however he is identified as the son of John in his marriage record of 1601.

[87] Scan of original record (ancestry.com); “James Hoare the sonne of John Hoare and Audere Hope the dauter of Willia Hope were married…”

[88] In London Visitation Pedigrees, 1664, p. 78, James Hoare and Audrey Hope are identified as the parents of 5 children. They are said to have been the parents of “Ferdinando, bapt. 6 Jan. 1602-3”, however this is undoubtedly a mistake; the Greens Norton parish register records the baptism of “Fardenando Hope ye sonne of John & of Elzabeth his wife” on that date. Consequently I have serious doubts that James and Audrey were the parents of James Hoare of the Mint. The evidence suggests that Audrey Hope died soon after the birth of her son James on 17 April 1614 as her husband apparently married Elizabeth Hastings on 9 November 1615. James and Elizabeth Hastings also had a son named James, though he is unmentioned in his father’s will which suggests that he died before 1657.

[91] Scan of original record (ancestry.com)

[92] Scan of original record (ancestry.com)

[93] Scan of original record (ancestry.com); In Burke’s Peerage and Baronetage (1970) this James is identified as the man who became Comptroller of the Mint. However, given that his father remarried in 1615 and that his first son by this second wife was called James, it is clear that the James who was baptised in 1614 died as a baby. The College of Arms possesses a contemporary pedigree of James Hoare of the Mint, in which his father and grandfather are both shown to be called James (the first James is identified as being of Greens Norton). For this reason, I identify James Hoare of the Mint as the son of James Hoare (baptised at Greens Norton 17 December 1584), son of James Hoare.

[99] Scan of original record (ancestry.com)

[100] Scan of original record (ancestry.com); A James Hoare was buried at Greens Norton on that day, however it is impossible to say whether it was this James or his first cousin once removed of the same name (baptised 17 December 1584). It is probable that James (b. 1616) died before 1657 as he is not mentioned in his father’s will.

[101] Scan of original record (ancestry.com); however this could be the burial record of James Hoare (baptised 17 December 1584) or perhaps most likely James, son of John, son of Robert (baptised 25 February 1653/4).

[176] Scan of original record (ancestry.com); the register identifies him as being “of Greens Norton”. The William who married Susanna May is often identified as William (b. 1724) son of William and Mary. However, there was another contemporary William Hoare who also married a woman named Susanna (surname unknown). That William had 8 children baptised at Moreton Pinkney between 1744 and 1762. On chronological grounds it is evident that William (b. 1727) cannot have been the father of a child baptised in 1744, so we must conclude that it was this William (b. 1727) who married Susanna May in 1748 and the other William (b. 1724) who lived at Moreton Pinkney. However, the William who married Susanna May was buried at Towcester 19 July 1816 aged “94”; but if he was born in 1724 he would have been 92, while if he was born in 1727 he would have been 89.

[232] John the victualler names James Hoare of Greens Norton as his “kinsman” in his will (written April 1650; proved May 1650). This is the only evidence that John the victualler was related to the Hoares of Greens Norton. John the victualler was married in 1626 and died in 1650; he could therefore be EITHER the John son of John who was baptised in 1587 OR the John son of James who was baptised in 1602. However, John son of James was left a large amount of property in Greens Norton in his father’s will and I identify him as the John who was a yeoman in Greens Norton and died in 1658, leaving property in Greens Norton to his wife and children. This leaves John son of John (baptised 1587) as the only remaining option; if this was the case then he was the younger brother of James Hoare (1581-1657) and the first cousin of James Hoare (b. 1584). Presumably he was referring to James (b. 1584) as his “kinsman”. However, it is also possible that John the victualler was another man, whose baptism record has not survived. For example he could be a brother of Henry Hoare of Walton (d. 1655), who was his contemporary in age, and whose extact connection to the Hoares of Greens Norton remains unclear.

[363] James Hoare senior of the Mint mentions only two grandsons named Henry Hoare and James Hoare in his will of 30 June 1695. A Charles Hoare had an account with the bank dated 23 December 1697; I suspect this Charles was a son of either Sir Richard’s uncle John (who had 3 sons living 1660) or uncle Charles (who had 3 children living 1664).

[449] Scan of original record (ancestry.com); there are two scanned parish registers for Greens Norton at this time. One records that Anthony was buried on 5 Feb and the other says 15 Feb. Neither gives his parentage and it is possible that it was Anthony (born 1622, living 1657), son of James Hoare and Elizabeth Hastings who was buried at this time. However, it seems more likely to have been Anthony (born 1648), son of John Hoare who had a son called John baptised at Greens Norton in 1692 (the other Anthony would have been aged 70 at this time) and it makes sense that he only had one child if he died the following year. Additional evidence comes from National Archives C 5/70/39, where Anthony Hoare was the plaintiff in a chancery case against James Hoare and others concerning the personal estate of John Hoare of Greens Norton, deceased. This appears to be Anthony and James squabbling over the inheritance of their eldest brother, though I have not seen the original court files.

[457] Scan of original record (ancestry.com); buried as “William Hoare, Jun[ior]”, while a “Will: Hoare Sen[ior]” was buried in May of the same year. I believe that this William (born 1607) can be safely identified as William Hoare junior, and that William Hoare senior was the man who married Ellen, being EITHER William (b. 1591) son of John and Mary, OR William (b. 1586) son of William and Catherine.

[458] A Copy of Papers Relating to Musters, Beacons, Subsidies, Etc. in the County of Northampton, A.D. 1586-1623, p. 46, ed. by John Wake (1926). A “Tho: Hore” appears in the 1591 Muster under Greens Norton, but it may equally refer to Thomas (b. 1568), son of William Hoare, or his first cousin Thomas (b. 1569), son of John Hoare. The Thomas Hoare of the muster roll appears to have settled in North Crawley, Buckinghamshire, where he had a daughter Grace baptised on 24 February 1607. Henry Hoare (later of Walton, grandfather of the banker Sir Richard Hoare) had 7 children baptised at North Crawley between 1614 and 1628. It appears therefore that Henry was the son of this Thomas.

[459] Henry and his family moved to Walton shortly before the birth of his youngest child Thomas, who was baptised there on 24 July 1631. DNA testing confirms that Henry was a descendant (chronologically he must have been a great-grandson) of Thomas Hoare, of Greens Norton (d. 1573).

[460] Henry had his first child in 1614 and his father Thomas was born in either 1568 or 1569. If I have reconstructed the family correctly he must have been born in about 1590-1595.

[461] CD of the Parish Registers of St Michael, Walton (N.Bucks) (Buckinghamshire Family History Society 2008). Her will survives (dated 23 September 1660; proved 1661), available at the Buckinghamshire County Council website.

[463] Scan of original record (ancestry.com); “Hellen Hoare, was buryed…”. I have not found any other records for a Helen Hoare and suppose that this is Ellen’s burial record.

[464] Scan of original record (ancestry.com); buried as “Will: Hoare Sen[ior]”, while a “William Hoare, Jun[ior]”, was buried in August of the same year. I believe that this William (husband of Ellen) can be safely identified as William Hoare senior, and that William Hoare junior was born in 1607, being the penultimate child of John Hoare and Mary Knot. This is confirmed by the will of William Hoare (written 8 May 1662; proved 1662), wherein he leaves property to his daughters Elizabeth and Frances.

[475] Scan of original record (ancestry.com); there are two Greens Norton parish registers which record the death of this Anne Hoare. Both call her the daughter of Elizabeth Hoare, widow.

The following also appears to refer to Anne, daughter of Elizabeth Hoare:

Northamptonshire Administrations of the Archdeaconry of Northampton 1677-1830

“Hoare, Anne, of Eastcoate in par. of Pattishall, infant, a minor, gr. 09 Dec 1684 to Elizabeth Hoare, of same, widow, the mother. Sureties, Thomas Waple, of same, yeoman, and John Arnold, of Daventry, Ironmonger. Invent £6, taken 02 Feb 1684 by Tho. Warner, John Perritt. (1)”

[477] Scan of original record (ancestry.com); the burial record calls her “Grace Hoar a child” but does not name her parents. It seems likely that she was a daughter of Edward and Grace Hoare.

[488] On 29 October 1617 Faithfull Battliff married Avice Yamans at Paulersbury. Given how unusual the first name ‘Faithfull’ is, this suggests Faithfull Hoare was descended from Faithfull Battliff.
