Glossary

The Glossary is divided into three major groupings based on the origin of the term: Genealogy, Genetics, and Genetic Genealogy. Genetic Genealogy is not a term in this glossary though but a parallel and separate Wiki book. So we have subdivided genetic genealogy into two subcategories of Terms and Industry here The full table of contents below maintains this grouping while providing a quick link to all the terms. Look on each group heading page for a definition of that grouping itself.

Realize that this glossary and all its entries and definitions is in the context of genetic genealogy and a surname study and often does not follow stricter definitions that may be used in biology or genetics in general. The terms Family Branch, Genetic Genealogy, and Surname Study are not defined here as they have top level pages in this wiki structure with more information than just a glossary entry.

For clarity, in the genetics community, they talk about three generations of sequencing technology: CE/Sanger (1st generation), NGS (2nd generation), and Long-read (3rd generation). There is a pseudo 2.5D also that mimics long-read using 2nd generation NGS technology. In the genetic genealogy community, we introduce the three waves of testing technology being supported and brought down to the consumer level. These are CE/Sanger (1st wave), Chip Microarray (2nd wave) and WGS (3rd Wave). This invariably leads to some confusion (generations of DNA sequencing technology versus waves of genetic genealogy test techniques).

Some glossary entries are much more extensive than an expected dictionary or encyclopedic entry and possibly need to move out into the wiki structure elsewhere. A continual work in progress as the field is developing rapidly.
