Next Generation Sequencing (or NGS for short) is an advanced form of genetic testing for base pair values to extract SNPs in DNA. Unlike the “chip” approach used in the late 00’s, this form is a quasi-direct, full sequencing approach. It generally will perform reads of actual base-pair sequences. A full-read of the whole strand is often not practical. BigY and yElite are yDNA NGS tests and Whole Genome is an all-inclusive DNA NGS test. Returned BAM files can be post-processed to extract many different things. For example, most STR values can be post-processed read from the yDNA BAM file.
