George HOARD and his second wife, Sally WILLIAMS, settled in Potter in 1802 on lot 9 of the fourth farm range. He was from Rhode Island, and she from Stephentown. They had a son, Benoni, who married a daughter of Capt. THOMAS, a solider killed in the War of 1812. Benoni died in 1831 and his wife in 1827, leaving two sons. By a former marriage, George HOARD had six sons: James, George, David, John, Justus and Amos, all of whom married, resided in Potter and finally moved West.

County of Geauga ) On this Twenty seventh day of December A.D. 1837, before John Hubbard an associate Judge of the Court of Common Pleas in & for the County of Geauga State of Ohio aforesaid, personally appeared Simeon Hoard a resident of Thompson in said County of Geauga & State of Ohio, aged eighty five years the twenty ninth day of August last who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provision of the act of Congress passed June 7th 1832.
That he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers, and served as herein stated: - In the month of September 1775 he resided at the place called Little Hoosook in the State of New York, and in that month volunteered to serve as a private in a Company of Volunteers commanded by Captain James Dennison, the Lieutenant of which was Stephen Niles and the Ensign Oliver Bentley, to serve in Fort George on Lake George on garrison duty, and immediately marched from Little Hoosook to Fort George, and continued employed in garrison duty there for one month when he together with the said Company were dismissed, and he returned home: That afterwards in the month of July 1776, the militia of Little Hoosook & vicinity being classed and it having then become the tour of duty of the class to which he belonged, he was thus again called into service, and marched with a Company commanded by Captain Cole, whose Christian name is not now remembered, from Little Hoosook to Schohairic where a meeting - house was picketed in & converted into a fort, and they were employed in doing garrison duty in the same in which service he was employed as a private for one month, when his tour of service expired, he was dismissed & returned home. - In the month of July 1777, an order was made calling for one half of the militia in Little Hoosook & its vicinity to march onto Ticonderoga(?), and he was one of the one half thus ordered into service; - They marched from Little Hoosook to Albany, from thence to Fort Edward, where he remained for a time doing duty in keeping guard at the Fort, but was soon ordered to march on to Lake George and he accordingly marched with the other troops as far as to Bloody Pond, where they met the waggons which had been previously

sent forward with provision to supply Ticonderoga(?), and which were returning in consequence of learning that Ticonderoga(?) had been taken, upon this he & the Troops with which he marched returned to Fort Edward, where he remained doing duty as aforesaid until the time they were called out for had espired when he was dismissed and he returned home, having served this tour one month, during this tour. James Dennison was his Captain, Stephen Niles Lieutenant, & Jacob Scheureshorn(?) Major of the Regiment in which he served - General Schursler was at Fort Edward at the time, and he believes in command at the time of the battle of Baunington in the same year he was again called into service & marched from Little Hoosook to Beuwright, under the same Captain Dennison, and was employed after the battle in gathering & securing the plunder. He served this tour one month & was then dismissed. - After this in the same year he again was called out, & served one month at the time Burgoyne was taken, under the same Captain & marched to Still-water to guard waggons with ammunition & supplies of provisions for the army acting against Burgoyne. He served one month on this tour.-
In the month of October 1778, news was brought that Butler & Brandt with their Indians stories had burnt Schohaui & committed many depredations in that part of the country, whereupon the whole militia where he lived were ordered out and he went in a company commanded by Captain Stephen Isles - They marched first to Albany where they halted & remained two days, from thence to Fort Hunter, then up to Fort Plain. Governor George Clinton was with them & commanded. He was engaged in this service for twelve days, as near as he recollects, when he returned back and was dismissed. Prior to this last mentioned tour & in the month of August 1778, he served a tour of one month, being the tour of duty of the class to which he belonged, and was stationed at the upper Fort in Schohonrie under the Command of Lieutenant Stubbs who comman-

ded that Fort. He served one month & was dismissed. He was born at Tiverton in the State of Rhode Island, the 29th day of August 1752. He has a record of his age in his bible. Before the commencement of the Revolutionary War he moved to the State of New York, Little Hoosook where he resided until 1806, when moved into Genessee County State of New York where he lived until he removed to Thompson aforesaid the fore part of November last. That he received as written discharges, & has no documentary evidence of his said service & knows of no person whose testimony he can procure to prove the saws. He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present, and declares that his name is not on the pension role of the Agency of any State

Isaac HOARD, a native of Rhode Island, was a Revolutionary soldier. He died in 1830. After having lived at Stephentown and Cherry Valley, he moved into Potter in 1810. His wife was Sally SHAW of Stephentown. Their children were: Peleg, Isaac, Edward, Gideon, Nancy and Polly. Peleg married first, Phebe STRICKLAND of Cherry Valley and for his second wife, widow KEELER of Potter. He settled with his father on the west 100 acres of lot 11, range three, and died there.

In the name of God, Amen

I Isaac Hoard of Potter Yates County New York being weak of body but of sound mind and memory do make and publish this my last will and testament. First I give my soul to God who gave it and my body to the Earth to be buried in a Christian like manner. I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Sarah the interest annually of twelve hundred dollars (which is now due me from Renssalaer Hoard) during her natural life. I also give her all the house hold furniture now owned by me to dispose of as she may think best when she shall have done with the same. I give and bequeath to my son Peleg Hoard two hundred and fifteen dollars. To my son Gideon Hoard one hundred dollars. To my grandson Lorenzo Hoard one hundred dollars. To my daughter Polly Thomas one hundred dollars. To my daughter Nancy Stoddard one hundred dollars (to be paid personally to them by my executor when due by theirs among after the same)(meaning Polly and Nancy) To my grand daughter Harriet Proples? fifty dollars. To my grand son Stickland Hoard fifty dollars. To my grand son Alonzo Hoard fifteen dollars. To my grand daughter Phebe Hoard fifteen dollars. To my grandson Malon Hoard five dollars. The nine last mentioned legacies amounting to seven hundred and fifty dollars shall be paid proportionally in four equal annual installments after the death of my wife without interest from and after her death. The widow of my property both personal and real I give and bequeath to my grandson Renssalaer Hoard two hundred and fifty dollars of which at his death I give to his two oldest children Jason and Menzo Hoard. I hearby appoint my son Peleg Hoard executor to this my last will and testament declaring it to be such hereby revoking all former wills in writing when of I have here unto set my hand and seal this 31st day of May 1841.

Renssalaer Hoard of ?, Ontario County a legate named in the last will and testament of Isaac Hoard deceased being first duly sworn doth dispose and say, that Isaac Hoard will in this town of Potter in said county of Yates on or about the 20th day of June last past. 1841. That he was a resident of said county of Yates at the time of his death. That he left Sarah Hoard, his widow, who resides in Potter Yates County; Peleg Hoard who resides in Potter in said county of Yates; Gideon Hoard of Benton in said county of Yates all in the State of New York; Sarah Hall wife of David Hall who resided when last heard from in the state of Indiana town and county not known; Polly Thomas wife of Benjamin Thomas supposed to reside in Huron County, State of Ohio town not known; Eunice Wright wife of James Wright residing in Cabridge? Ohio; Nancy Stoddard wife of Philo Stoddard who resided when last heard from about 140 miles from New Orleans in the state of Louisiana but the town and county not know; Isaac Hoard who resides in Jackson county town not know in the state of Michigan and Sarah Hoard, Levi Hoard, Olive Butler wife of Justin Butler. Isaac Hoard. Edward Hoard, Obadiah Hoard, Washington Hoard, Juliet Hoard, Eunice Hoard and Sylvia Hoard both of whom are believed to have intermarried, but the names of whose husbands are unknown and two other children supposed to be minors whose names are unknown all the last mentioned being the widow and children of Edward Hoard, deceased and all supposed to reside in the town of Shelby, Macomb county, State of Michigan. The heirs as law and next of kin of the said Isaac Hoard heir surviving and further this deponent says not.

Daniel Gates, he struck out on foot to the area of Buffalo Hill,
Sheldon, where he began to clear the forest. He built a cabin, but
in July l801|, he sickened of a fever and died, one of the first
pioneer deaths in this end of the state. The son and family settled
on the claim in October of that year."

John Hoard, if we remember correctly, was born in Rhode Island, came to the State of New York in an early day, and there married Patience McNeer. They had eight children, whose names were Alva B., Celestia, Anna, Charles, Diana, Abigail, Amos, and Nancy, He came to Auburn with his family about 1830, and settled in Auburn valley, on the Cowles tract, where he remained until 1848, when he sold out, and moved west of the State road, and lived with his youngest son until he died in 1854. Mrs. Hoard survived her husband a number of years, but died several years since.

Middlesex, Ontario Co and Yates Co, NY
Middlesex was formed in 1796 while still part of Ontario County, New York. Middlesex was known as "Augusta" until 1808, when the name was changed to "Middlesex" to avoid confusion with another location named Augusta. When Yates County was formed in 1823, Middlesex became part of the new county.
The Town of Potter was formed from part of Middlesex in 1832, and more of Middlesex was added to Potter in 1856.

Hoard of the Town of Conewango in the said County of Cattaraugus died in the said town of Connewango on or about the twenty seventh day of December in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and seventy four. That at the time of his death he was an inhabitant of the County of Cattaraugus. That he left no will, as far as your petitioner has heard, or been able to discover: That he left your petitioner his widow, and Franklin Hoard, Lorenzo Hoard, Anna Hoard, Emmett Hoard, Milton Hoard, Marrilla Wildey, Mary Ann Shaw -- his childen and heirs at law him surviving. Albany, Green County Wisconsin Vindicator, Thursday, March 12, 1896 Alva D. Hoard was born in New York Oct. 17, 1808 and died March 8, 1896, aged 87 years, 5 months and 8 days. He was married twice, first to Betsy Silvernail, of Auburn, Ohio. Four children were born to them--Jas. M., Charles H., Eliza J. and Emma E. He was married the second time to Elizabeth Wells, also of Auburn, Ohio, and this union was blessed with one son, William R. Mr. Hoard was a physician by professon, and when a young man often filled the pulpit in a very able manner. Many of our citizens remember of hearing him preach, or exhort in an earnest and convincing manner. For many years he made his hom with his favorite child, Emma (Mrs. Jas. Mitchell) until her death a few months ago broke up the family. A faithful Christian gentleman, his well known form will be long missed. The funeral was held at the residence of T.G. Mitchell Tuesday afternoon, and the remains laid to rest beside those of his daughter, who so recently preceded him to the better land.

They moved to Auburn in 1832, and took up their residence in Auburn valley. They had four children, whose names were James M., Eliza J., Mary M., and Charles H. Mr. Hoard was a physician of the botanic school, and had an extensive practice in Auburn and the surrounding townships. Dr. Hoard manufactured a liniment which was known in those early days, as Hoard's liniment, and was called one of the best liniments then in use. The doctor lost his wife in 1847, and was married again the same year, to Mary E. Wells. They had one child, whose name was William R. Dr. Hoard resided in Auburn until 1857, when he sold out, and moved to Wisconsin and Iowa, where he practiced several years, when he returned to Ohio, and is now practicing medicine at Chagrin Falls, Ohio.

Charles Hoard came to Auburn with his parents, and was married in 1836, to Lucy J., daughter of Jacob Ensign. They had five children, whose names were Permelia, John R., Charles N., Clarissa, and Frank. Mr. Hoard lived in different places in the township for several years, finally sold out and moved to Newbury, and died there in 1862. His widow is still living, and resides in Michigan.

Hervey N. Ensign, eldest son of Jacob Ensign, was born in Massachusetts; came to Auburn with his parents, and, about 1836, was married to Diana, daughter of John Hoard. They had one child -- Patience O. Previous to their marriage Mr. Ensign purchased land, on the Mills tract, in the north part of the township, on which they settled. Mrs. Ensign died there in 1874. In 1877, Mr. Ensign married, for his second wife, Vielda Smith, whose maiden name was Sweet, daughter of Henry and Joicy Sweet, and they now reside on the same farm where Mr. Ensign first settled.

In Almond, N. Y., Feb. 13th, 1880, Mr. James C. Hoard, in the 75th year of his age. His death was a result of a decay of the powers of nature. His sickness was of only a few weeks in duration. At the time of his death, he was living in the family of his son-in-law, Mr. John Sisson, where he received every possible attention. Many years since he became a citizen of the town of Alfred, where he resided up to a few years since. In early life he made profession of faith in Christ, which he ever after maintained. He was a man of industry and strict integrity, and for his many virtues was highly esteemed.

THE HISTORY of the White Horse includes the names of some of the earliest pioneers of southern Lapeer County. Daniel Ammerman built the inn in 1850. After several changes of ownership, it passed to the Hoard family, first represented in this area by Lorenzo Hoard. He passed through Metamora in 1837 when Flint was little more than a few log cabins and Indians were as numerous as the settlers.] Hoard returned in the early 1840's and on Oct. 15. 1846. bought 40 acres. The same year, Isaac Hoard, a retired sea captain believed to have been his uncle, bought some land from Able Webster. Later, when Lorenzo Hoard bought the inn, he renamed it the Hoard House. He added the east wing to the north-south structure. He served no liquor, and the inn remained dry until 1906, when the family ownership ended. By 1858 Hoard was paying almost $50 a year in taxes on the inn. He was appointed postmaster of the village on Aug. 2, 1861, and served until 1877. James Banker, Grandfather of Mrs. Hoard, lived in the area. Banker, who had fought in the Revolutionary War, had to go to Pontiac once a month to pick up his $100 pension. He was 105 when he died. In the early days, the stagecoaches went to Pontiac as well as Hadley and Thornville. Thornville was on the Flint river and its mill made it a center of commerce larger than Metamora. Now it is all gone except for a church and a few homes. About 1872, the Michigan Central Railroad built its line through Metamora and Hoard received a franchise to feed and house passengers. One of Hoard's daughters, Louisa, was born in Penn Yan, N.Y. but was reared in Metamora. Her husband, James Perkins, son of Harry F. Perkins, was postmaster from 1841-1843. They managed Hoard House after the death of Lorenzo Hoard in 1888. Their daughter, Bessie, and her husband William Thompson sold it in 1906 to William Detter and Samuel Miller. The partnership of Miller-Detter put liquor in. But temperance was gaining popularity and it wasn't long before the townspeople voted under the Local Option Law of 1889 to make the town dry. Today the White Horse Inn is owned by a Detroit firm that has remodeled the interior and plans still more work. The weight of its years is lightly borne, and it is keeping up with the times under the management of Mrs. Betty Bailiff. Where travelers once waited for stagecoach, there now are jazz sessions, every Sunday.

HEZEKIAH HOARD is the eldest of ten in the family of Hezekiah and Lodema (Babcock) Hoard; natives of New York. The elder Hoard was a soldier in the war of 1812; he moved to Geauga County, Ohio, in 1832, thence to this county in the fall of 1835, where he died at the home of the subject in December, 1869, his wife having died three years before at the same place. The subject was born in Stephenstown, N.Y., March 14, 1807; he removed to Geauga County, Ohio, where he bought a farm, sold it in 1835, and came to Lima Township, this county, where he farmed on shares until 1838, when he came to this township and invested in eighty acres of unimproved land; he yet lives on this farm, having added sixty acres more and largely improved it. Mr. Hoard was married January 1, 1832, to Rhoda Ingram, a native of New York; she died November 9, 1838. Of two children born to them, one (Myron) is yet living. February 28, 1841, Mr. Hoard was married to Miss Ann Wilcox, who was born December 19, 1814, and is one of four children born to William and Nancy (Cain) Wilcox, natives of Connecticut. Mr. and Mrs. Hoard are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church and have had six children, three of whom are living - Mary, now Mrs. Randolph; William and George.

Death of Mrs. Wildey-a long and useful life ended at Conewango Valley
Died, at Conewango Valley, July 10 1902, Mrs. Murilla Hoard Wildey was born in Berlin Mass., July 12 1814, and was 88 years old. Her family emigrated to New York state when she was a child, and settled at Conewango. She was married to Josha Wildey, Dec 1 1833. She was the mother of ten children, five of whom are living as follows: Mrs. Mary Hildum, Randolph; William Wildey,Cherry Creek; Mrs. Alice Bentley, Conowango; DeEtta Powers, Prairieburg, Iowa.
Milton Hoard of Conewango is a brother of the deceased. Her husband died a number of years ago. The funeral was held at the church, Conewango Valley, July 12th. Mrs. Lula Wightman of Canandaigua, N.Y., a minister of the Seveneth Day Adventist denomination officiating, and was attended by a large concourse of friends and relatives. Interment at Clear Creek Cemetery.

Emmet Hoard, who for many years past has been an invalid , passed out of his
suffering on Sunday evening, at his rooms in this village. The funeral obsequies,
followed by the Masonic ceremony by the Randolph order, occurred on Tuesday.
The remains were taken to Clear Creek for interment

Death of John M. Hoard
John Milton Hoard, one of the best known and most highly esteemed residents of Conewango Valley died at the W. C. A. hospital in Jamestown on Saturday following a surgical operation which was performed Friday. Mr. Hoard had been ill for some time and was taken to the hospital Thursday in the hope that an operation might prolong his life. Mr. Hoard, was a prominent farmer and horseman. He was the son of Samuel and Huldah Hoard and was born at Stephentown, Mass. When but one year old he was taken to Conewango Valley by his parents and remained a resident of that town until cut down by death. He was married to Miss Elizaabeth Cook of Clear Creek by whom he became the father of three children, two of whom, Winford W. Hoard of Corry, Pa., and Charles Nathaniel Hoard of Clear Creek, survive, together with their mother. Mr. Hoard was 78 years old and had lived more than three-quarters of a century in the town of Conewango.
