HOAR, COL. WILLIAM J., (RET.), 76, of Louisville, passed away Tuesday, August 17, 2004, at Hospice & Palliative Care of Louisville's inpatient unit at Norton Healthcare Pavilion. He was a native of Brooklyn, NY, a retired Army veteran with 24 years of service, past president and member of South Park Country Club and a member of American Legion Post #246, Moose Lodge #5 and the Retired Officers Association. He was preceded in death by a brother, Rev. Thomas Hoar. He is survived by his wife, Gerry Hoar; three daughters, Teri DeWeerd, Susan Hoar and Janet West; three sons, John, Mike, and Kenny Hoar; brother Joseph Hoar; sister, Mary Crowley; and nine grandchildren. His funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, 7333 Southside Dr., with entombment in Evergreen Mausoleum. Visitation will be from 1-8 p.m. Friday at Evergreen Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to Mass of the Air or Hospice of Louisville.William married Living. (daughter of Norbert J. The Rev. Thomas F. Hoar, former president and rector of Mary Immaculate Seminary, Northampton, died Friday of Lou Gehrig's disease. Hoar was president of the seminary from 1985 until becoming ill in 1987. Since 1987, he resided at St. Catherine's Infirmary, Philadelphia.
Hoar prepared for the priesthood at St. Vincent's Seminary, Philadelphia, and in 1958 graduated from Mary Immaculate Seminary, Northampton. He was ordained in 1962 and received his doctorate in 1965 at the University of St. Thomas in Rome, Italy.
Upon returning to the United States, he taught at the Seminary of Our Lady of Angels, Albany, N.Y., 1965-70, and 1971-72, and was president/rector of St. Vincent de Paul Seminary, Boynton Beach, Fla., 1970-71.
During his administrative tenure from 1972 to 1985 at St. John's University in Jamaica, N.Y., Hoar held the following posts: assistant to the dean, Staten Island Campus, 1972-73; special assistant to the executive vice president, 1973-1975; dean of St. John's College, 1975- 85, and academic vice president for liberal arts and sciences and education and human services, 1980-85.
He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y.
Survivors: Brothers, Col. William of Fairdale, Ky., and Col. Joseph of Great Neck, N.Y., and a sister, Mary, wife of George Crowley of Garden City, N.Y.

Joseph Vincent Hoar
Colonel (Retired), U.S. Army
Age 81, of Newark, DE, passed away on Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Elsmere.
Born in Brooklyn, NY, Joseph was the son of the late William and Mary (O'Connor) Hoar. He graduated from St. John's University in Brooklyn. Joseph served his country proudly in the US Army for 32 years, retiring in 1975 as a full Colonel. Joseph served in Korea and twice in VietNam and received two bronze stars and a meritorious service medal for his actions.
After his military service, he worked as the traffic manager for Scheiflein & Co. in New York before his final retirement in Newark, DE. As an active member and past commander of the McDaniel American Legion Post in Newark, Joseph contributed much of his energy to proclaim and support the Legion's National Oratorical Contest for High School Students.
As a parishioner of St. Mary of the Assumption Church, Joseph attended Mass daily, served on the board of St. Patrick's Cemetery and was an active volunteer. Joseph's hobbies included bowling and golf.
In addition to his parents, Joseph was predeceased by his brothers, Rev. Thomas Hoar and Col. William Hoar.
Joseph will be dearly missed by his wife of 58 years, Helen Marie (Martin) Hoar; his daughters and sons-in-law, Mary E. and Edward Seage of Hockessin, Agnes T. and Lawrence Niech of Chatham, NJ, and Catherine Shaw of Washington, DC; and his sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph V. and Judy Shore of Tecumseh, OK and William J. and Mary Hoar of St. Louis, MO. Also surviving are his nine grandchildren, Pete, Sarah, and Rachel Shore, Kristin, Eileen and Eddie Seage, Claire and Catherine Niech, and Samuel Hoar; a great-granddaughter, Alexis Shore; and his sister and brother-in-law, Mary and George Crowley of Garden City, NY.
Friends and family are invited to visitation on Tuesday, November 16, between 6 and 8 pm at Mealey Funeral Home, 2509 Limestone Road, Wilmington. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday morning at 9 am at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, 7200 Lancaster Pike, Hockessin. Burial will follow at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear, DE.
