    Ok, here is my theory, after 15 years of work, I believe Eady Hoar is the son of Leonard Hoar and Lois Stiles. One reason is Eady naming his daughter Leonora. The other is that Leonard and Lois were married in 1802 and no one had any children showing up for them until 1816 something just was not right. The other large issue is no one and tell me the source that added John Hoar (Martha Rogers husband) as a son of David Jr. I truly believe that John is also the son of Leonard & Lois. He is buried beside them in the old Shepordy Cemeter. Leonard has also only ever had 3 children listed Ester, Leonard & Allen. I have 3 more children proven and I now know where Leonard Jr went. First Leonard's & Lois's family Pheobe Hoar b abt 1811 nb married Michael Doherty (they are the parents of Clarissa Doherty that married George Albert Hoar) Eady b 1813 (one of John's & Martha's Children named after him) George Hoar b 1814 Nb see below Esther b 1816 (no marriage found)] Mary E Hoar b 10 Jul 1819 married Abiel Smith Leonard Samuel Hoar b 5 Nov 1823 see below Allen Hoar b 1825 The proof on the two daughters are in the Vital stat Newspapers in the NB Archives. It has Pheobe's Obit and Leonard's return to NB What has caused the biggest confusion is that My line of Hoar's seem to change their name when they enter the State. George & Leonard both changed their names to Stiles, first they went to Maine where they married sisters George married Thankful Cash and Leonard (Samuel) m Mary Elizabeth Cash, I have their children, I loaded the whole think into Gencircles, not sure if it is up yet on their site. next to John Hoar and Martha Rogers Margaret Hoar b 1832 died 25 Sep 1845 buried Wilson Cemetery, Westmorland Co, NB Naomi 1834 Rebecca 1836 Mary Jane 1838 died 26 Sep 1868 Albert Co, NB, buried with parents in Old Shepordy Cemetery. Eady James Hoar b 17 Jul 1845 (another that changed his name to Stiles moved to US) George Albert abt 1847 died abt 1874 John Newton Hoar b 1849, (he also changed his name to Stiles and moved to US, changed it back to Hoar when returned to NB) This is another reason I believe they all belong to Leonard.     From a Biography, 1898
    Leonard C. Stiles, an old soldier of the Civil War, and one of Marshall County's prominent farmers, lives on Section 16, White Township. He was born in Cape Elizabeth, Maine September 30, 1843. His father, George Stiles [George Hoar], was a native of Nova Scotia. He was a marine engineer and followed that occupation for many years on the Atlantic and Pacific oceans and touched at nearly all the European harbors. He died in St. Croix County, Wisconsin in December 1860, having located on a farm in that county to spend the declining years of his life. He married Thankful Cash in Cape Elizabeth in 1839. She was born there in 1822.
    Our subject, Leonard C. Stiles, lived in Maine until he was ten years of age and then moved with his parents to Wisconsin and lived on a farm until the breaking out of the Civil War in 1861. September 30th of that year, he enlisted in Company A, Twelfth Wisconsin Infantry Volunteers, at River Falls. The company was at once sent to Camp Randall in Madison, where they remained until the following spring. They were sent to Kansas for a short time, and were in the skirmishes at Lamar, Mississippi November 8, 1862; Cold Water, April 9, 1863: at the siege of Vicksburg until its surrender, July 4, 1863; and the siege of Atlanta until its surrender, September 2, 1864. He was also at the siege of Jackson, Mississippi, until it was evacuated, and his company was a part of the force that captured Fort Beauregard September 4, 1863. He was at Natchez and participated in two skirmishes at that place and was with Sheridan on his famous Meridian raid, together with many skirmishes connected with the same. He was discharged from the service at Chattanooga, Tennessee, in the fall of 1864, and at once returned to his old home in Maine. After a visit of three months he returned to Wisconsin, but his health was so broken down in consequence of his army life that he was unable to do physical labor for four years. His weight was reduced from 150 to 90 pounds, but he afterward recovered from his sickness and gained materially in weight and strength, and in 1868 he began operating his father's farm and was thus engaged for two years. He then bought 40 acres of timber land, which he lived upon until 1874. He then traded the land for village property in River Falls, and hired to Ben Timberlake to work on his farm for one year. During this time he traded his village property for a farm in St. Croix County and made that his home until the spring of 1880. He then sold out and went to what is now Cass County, North Dakota, and filed a soldier's claim to 160 acres. This claim was 20 miles from the nearest village, but his family joined him in the spring of 1881, and a few other settlers located in that vicinity. Mr. Stiles circulated a petition and secured the establishment of a postoffice. which was named Leonard in his honor, and which is still in existence.
    In June, 1883, he moved to what is now Marshall County, South Dakota, and at once filed a claim to the southwest quarter of Section 16, White Township. This he has improved and increased from time to time until now he has a fine farm of 320 acres of fine well-improved land.
    Mr. Stiles married Helen A. Chapin in River Falls, September 13, 1868. She was born in St. Lawrence County, New York , a daughter of George W. and Sarah M. Chapin, both natives of the Empire State. The father died in Pierce County, Wisconsin and the mother in Marshall County, South Dakota.
    Eight children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Stiles, four of whom are now dead, three having died in infancy, and one died at the age of three months. The four remaining bear the following names, Walter E., Alvan C., Georgiana, and Roy C. The first three named were born in Wisconsin, and the last named was born in Marshall County. Politically, Mr. Stiles is a Democrat and was elected to the office of County Commissioner on the Populist ticket in 1896. He has also been county and township Justice of Peace. He is a member of the G.A.R. Post at Britton. In political movement s and affairs relating to the government and township in which he lives, he takes a prominent and active part and has been very successful in his undertakings.
    Being one of the very earliest settlers, he has seen the country in all of its stages of development and his name has been closely connected with its growth and prosperity. Taken from the Comoendium of Biography 1898 Issue. By Geo. A. Ogle and Co.
    Leonard C. Stiles died Thursday, April 4th, after having been in failing health for several months. The funeral was held Saturday afternoon from the Methodist Church. Rev. C. W. Rodgers officiating, and the remains were laid to rest in Britton cemetery. A brother, George Stiles, of Valley City, North Dakota and the surviving members of the family were present at the funeral. (There was no date on this, but it must have been in the early 1900's.)
    The widow and three children remain, Walter E., Mrs. Georgiana Gotkin, of Broadview, Montana and Roy 0. of Britton.

    Leonard C. Stiles died 4 APR 1918 in Britton, Marshall County, ND and is buried in Lot 130 grave 12 in the cemetery in Britton. A history of Leonard's colorful past is outlined in the obituary written by his wife. "After moving to Britton, his old war injury turned to gangrene, and he had to have his leg amputated. He was instrumental in establishing the town of Leonard, North Dakota, and served as its first postmaster and also Justice of Peace." Russell Bowen talked to Edna Mable Stiles Davis about her grandfather, Leonard Crocket Stiles. She knew him personally and she said his middle name was "Crocket" -- not Casper.     Stephen S. Hoar, a well known citizen of Shell Lake, was born in Albert County, New Brunswick, Oct. 27, 1848. His parents were George and Isabella (Stiles) Hoar, both natives of Albert County.
    In 1763 there came from Devonshire, England, three brothers, James, John and Ebenezer Hoar, who settled in Massachusetts. They traced their lineage back to Herman Hoar, an officer of Richard Coeur de Lion, who was knighted for gallant service at the battle of Essex. A hotel in London has been kept by successive generations of the Hoar family for five hundred years, each proprietor bearing the name of John Hoar.
    Stephen S. Hoar is descended from Eben Hoar, who was a Loyalist and went to Nova Scotia from new England about the beginning of the Revolution. His grandson, James L. Hoar, was the father of George Hoar, both of whom were lumbermen. George Hoar came to Shell Lake about 1892, and died there July 4, 1894, in his seventy-fifth year. He had been an earnest and active member of the M. E. Church. His wife, Isabella (Stiles) Hoar, died in 1867, when forty-eight years of age. Her father, Stephen Stiles, was born in Canada, whither his parents had come from the North of Ireland; he was a sea captain, and lived to be sixty-seven years old, dying in Albert County, New Brunswick. Our subject's brother Frank commanded the "Lizzie R," which went down during the great gale of August, 1873, on Georgia Shoals, near New York, none of the crew ever being heard from.
    On reaching his majority Stephen S. Hoar engaged in lumbering and shipbuilding at alma, New Brunswick, where he also carried on a general store. For a number of years he was successful, but owing to the loss, in the Bay of Fundy, of a vessel and cargo which he owned, and to other disasters, he lost his property. In July, 1886, he came to Shell Lake and entered the employ of the Shell Lake Lumber Co., spending five years in the store of that firm, meantime opening a livery stable, which he still carries on. He has built two stables in the village, and his present barn, built in 1892, is a commodious building with a stone basement. He keeps from twenty to twenty-five horses, and has an excellent custom. For a number of years he has also dealt in ice, and now supplies the whole village. All of his business is conducted honorably and with judgment, and he is highly respected by his friends and associates.
    Mr. Hoar married (first) June 4, 1873, Susan Wright, daughter of Robert and Susan Wright, of Albert County, New Brunswick. She was a member of the Methodist Church, and died in 1884, at the age of thirty-one, leaving four children, viz.: Frank, now an attorney at Shell Lake, a graduate of Wisconsin University; Albert, in business with his father; Belle, Mrs. W. B. Kinzie, of Shell Lake; and Blair, editor and proprietor of the Shell Lake Watchman. In February, 1885, Mr. Hoar married (second) Marilla Strong, who was born in Albert County, daughter of David Strong. She died at Shell Lake in 1889, leaving two sons, Harry and David, both at school. Mr. Hoar married (third) in January, 1893, Martha Devereaux, daughter of Walter Devereaux, of St. John, New Brunswick, and to this marriage were born five children: Milton, Stephen, Walter, John and Robert, the last named dying when two and a half years old. Mrs. Martha (Devereaux) Hoar is a communicant of the Episcopal Church. Mr. Hoar is a member of the I. O. F. [sic]. In politics a Republican, he has been for two years a member of the town board, and since 1899 deputy sheriff of Washburn county.

    1 - Editorial Note - Stephen S. Hoar's death date was derived from the Washburn Co. Register of Deeds Death Index. The death record is on file at the Register of Deeds Office in Shell Lake, in Volume 8, page 309. His burial location is in the Shell Lake Memorial Cemetery (1847 - 1927). His second wife, Marilla, is also buried in this cemetery (death date of 08 Mar 1890 on stone, aged 41y). His third wife, Martha H., is buried in this cemetery as well (1858 - 1945) along with his children, Frank E. (06 Apr 1874 - 27 Apr 1905); Albert W. (1875 - 1955); Harry (1885 - 1975); Milton Devereux (28 Nov 1893 - 13 Aug 1953); Stephen S. (1896 - 1945); Walter G. (20 Aug 1898 - 24 Jan 1979); John E. (1901 - 1974); and Robert (no dates).
