Before coming to Texas George Sawyer owned and operated a Silk Factory in Massachusetts until about 1842. This factory believed to be located somewhere in Worcester County. At that time there was a rather large scale operation of raw silk factories in an experimental venture, one of these being Benjamin Franklin.
Obviously his venture proved unsuccessful, so George, along with many other of his kin, responded to the advertisement for settlers in Texas. They signed up with the Colony of Charles Fenton Mercer and his Associates, whose Colony would consist of land in the Robertson and Nacogdoches Districts of Texas.
They traveled down the Mississippi River by boat and overland to what is now Navarro and Henderson Counties in Texas. On April 29, 1850 in the town of Buffalo, Henderson Co., Nacogdoches District Cert. 455, 3rd Class 640 acres was issued to George Sawyer and patented May 27, 1852 by Mercer's Colony Certification and patented by the State of Texas. This survey was located in what is the modern-day Crandall area of Kaufman Co. Henderson County is a parent county of Kaufman and Van Zandt Counties, but most of the family would eventually settle in Kaufman County.
George lived long enough to see the land patents granted.
After the death of George, his wife Lucy made her home with their daughter Mary Augusta and husband James W. W. Gibbs in Crandall. She lived with them until her death and is buried in the Crandall Cemetery; the original part of this cemetery being partially on the Gibbs property, so it is assumed that it was first a family cemetery.
In 1856, Kaufman County Deed records indicate that George Sawyer's heirs sold his headright to Abner Johnson.
