PORTER Leslie R the present Chief of Police of the city of Bloomington Ill has rounded his life into broad and dependable channels winning as an incumbent of an important municipal office the non partisan confidence of the entire community Leslie R Porter has been a resident of Bloomington since 1902 in which year be exchanged the fortunes of the farmer for these of a commercial salesman for the monument and stone building material firm of Higgins Jung Klelnau Company This position Mr Porter maintained with all around satisfaction until his appointment as Chief of Police of Bloomington by Mayor Holland in May 1907 for a term of two years Mackinaw Tazeweil County Ill where Mr Porter was born September 6 1866 was the early home of his parents John H and Puella E Clayton Porter who were born in Ohio and who were farmers by occupation The elder Porter continued his accustomed wage earning career in Tazewell County making his home in Mackinaw and his son received a thorough training in this fundamental and time honored occupation The lad attended the public schools of the country and town but ever showed an inclination to learn more from observation and experience than from between the covers of books The age of his father drew his way increasing responsibility on the farm where he was employed until the death of the older man in 1902 Since then he has made his home in Bloomington and as salesman and politician won the high regard of the inteiligent people of the community The marriage of Mr Porter and Katherine J Wilson daughter of John H Wilson of Mackinaw occurred February 5 1882 and of their union their is one son Clayton.
[Note: A marriage in 1882 would have made them 14 and 15 years old. The 1900 census (Mackinaw, Tazewell, Illinois) says they had been married for 9 years, therefore I added the marriage date of abt Feb 5, 1892. Roz Edson MrsEdson@gmail.com]
