Lew was born March 28, 1919, in Edinburgh, Texas, to William Zachary Miller and Anna Julia (Kelly) Miller. Jean Douglas Miller, his wife of 60 years, died in 2005. He was predeceased by his only brother, William Zachary Miller Jr. Lew leaves five children, Kate Miller Carl and her husband, Alfred Carl, of Southampton, Elizabeth Miller Grasty and her husband, Warren, of Herndon, Va., Louisa Miller Hoar and her husband, William P. Hoar, of Silver Spring, Md., Judith Miller Conlin and her husband, Michael P. Conlin, of Southampton, and Bruce Douglas Miller of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He leaves six grandchildren, Francis Wiermer, Jenny Kapinos, Jared Conlin, Meredith Hoar, Emily Hoar and Andrew Carl, and two great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Thomas Kapinos. He also leaves two nephews, Gary and William Miller, and his sisters-in-law, Mercy Miller and Maryann Douglas. Lew attended Texas public schools and graduated from Southwest Texas State Teachers College (now SW Texas University). In 1998, he was recognized as outstanding alumnus from the school. While there he was business manger of the newspaper, a member of the White Star Fraternity, and was awarded the Order of the Purple Mask for his theatrical achievements. He received an MFA in playwriting from the University of Iowa. While there, he acted in "The Dark of the Moon" in a role written for him. The play later went on to Broadway, while Lewis went to serve in World War II. He was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army attached to the 179th General Hospital in France, where he met and married Jean Douglas of Westfield, who was serving with the American Red Cross. He taught speech and drama at Texas A&I (now Texas A&M Kingsville), and at Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vt. In the mid- 1950s he founded a summer repertory company, the Town Hall Theater, in Brewster. He continued his interest in theater locally, writing five plays with his wife, Jean, for the New Town Players in Southampton. He wrote tirelessly, producing the plays and short stories and a book of personal vignettes of reminiscences and of family history. Lew worked for Sun Life of Canada for over 50 years and was manager of the West Springfield branch. In 1974, he and Jean founded the Wintergreen Kennels in Southampton, specializing in boarding and grooming services for dogs and cats. They were charter members of the American Boarding Kennel Association. He served the town of Southampton as chairman of the building committee for the original William E. Norris School. He was Scoutmaster of BSA Troop 110 in Westfield, and later continued to assist other troops with merit badges and camp-outs. Lewis was an active member of the First Congregational Church in Southampton, and had been a member of the First Congregational Church of Westfield for many years. A service to celebrate Lew's life is planned for Feb. 23 at the Southampton Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Congregational Church of Southampton, P.O.
