      Estella H. Meaker, 98, of Perry Hill, Waterbury, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2008, at Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin.
      She was born in Montpelier Nov. 18, 1910, daughter of William and Catherine (Buchanan) Hoare, and graduated in 1929 from Montpelier High School
      She married Ralph S. Meaker in Montpelier Aug. 17, 1935. He died Dec. 27, 2001.
      As a young woman, Estella she was employed first by the Brown Insurance Agency and later by the Vermont Tax Department. After her marriage, she was busy and happy as a homemaker, raising her family.
      She was a member of Waterbury Congregational Church and a former member of Queen Esther Chapter 7 of the Order of Eastern Star in Waterbury.
      In her leisure time, Estella enjoyed playing bridge, flower gardening, refinishing furniture, and antiquing. She will be lovingly remembered by her family as devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She took particular pride in her family and her home, and enjoyed her many dear friends.
      Survivors include her children, Nancy Laird and husband Jim of Westport, Mass., John Meaker of Waterbury, and Thomas Meaker and wife Pamela of South Burlington; her nine grandchildren, Jennifer White and Sarah Laird, both of Nyack, N.Y., Nicholas Laird of Oslo, Norway, Alice Varon and Ruth Chiarolanzio, both of Marbletown, N.Y., Jeffrey Meaker of Brooklyn, Nancy Meaker of Washington, D.C., Diana Meaker of Philadelphia and William Meaker of Boston; 10 great-grandchildren; a brother, Joseph Howard of Montpelier; and nieces, nephews and extended family.
