      GEORGE E. CULLEN, 90 ROCKFORD - George E. Cullen, 90, of Rockford died at 3:42 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, 2009, in Stephenson Nursing Center in Freeport. Born Nov. 8, 1919, in Rockford, son of George P. and Opal C. Horr Cullen. Married to Ellen H. (Baumgartner) Cullen, who died in 1974. He then married Doris I. Ray. Graduated from Rockford Central High in 1937. He was a production supervisor at National Lock Co. for many years. Served as a captain in the U.S. Army in Europe, in a tank division under Gen. Patton during World War II. Member of Holy Family Catholic Church and served in the St. James Parish in his youth. Survivors include wife, Doris; sons, G. Steven (Pam) Cullen of Black River Falls, Wis., and Michael Cullen of Rockford; sister, Mary Lou (Albert) Peila of Rockford; grandchildren, Bradley (Ann) Cullen, Gregory (Shelly) Cullen and Amy (Adam) Taylor; six great-grandchildren; stepchildren, Gary (Nancy) Ray and Carol (Arthur) Hilstad; stepgrandson, Kevin Ray; sister-in-law, Ruth Cullen; brother-in-law, John Duncan; and several nieces and nephews. Predeceased also by parents; sister, Catherine Duncan; and brother, Benjamin Cullen. Mass of Resurrection at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 23, in Holy Family Catholic Church, 4407 Highcrest Road, Rockford. Burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 22, in Julian-Poorman-Welte Funeral Home, with a prayer service at 7:15 p.m., and from 9:30 Monday to time of service in the church.
