After the death of his father, the family moved to the state of NY. LEWIS received an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, NY. LEWIS died of wounds on September 27, 1878, near Fort Wallace, KS, and his body was escorted to Sandy Hill, Washington Co., NY, for burial. He had a brother Louis C. LEWIS. Fort Lewis, located at Pagosa Springs, CO, was named in honor of Colonel Lewis. We need the above information for a history book and a display in our museum.
