      [[Obituary
Ralph W. Hoar Jr., 56, of Arlington, Va., died September 21, 2001, from prostate cancer. The son of the late Ralph W. Hoar Sr. and Margaret Meadows Hoar grew up in Toana, Va. He graduated from James Blair High School and received his BA from High Point College. Mr. Hoar campaigned for automobile product and environmental safety for over three decades. In 1977, Mr. Hoar became the nation's first registered lobbyist for automobile airbags. He founded Ralph Hoar and Associates in 1989 and Safetyforum.com in 1996. With these businesses he specialized in researching, defining, articulating and pursuing the solution to significant public safety concerns. He was instrumental in the recalls of vehicles proven to be unsafe: Chrysler minivan's defective back latches, Ford's fire-prone ignition switches, and Ford Firestone's Wilderness All-Terrain Tires. He has most recently served as a consultant for CBS News, ABC News and several network television magazines shows, including "20/20" and "60 Minutes." Mr. Hoar is survived by his mother; his son, Jason Hoar Stryker; and daughter-in-law, Jorie L. Stryker; his daughter, Adrienne E. Hoar; the mother of his children, Patsy J. Hemp; his partner, Russwin N. Francisco; and two brothers, James C. Hoar of Richmond and Robert "[Wayne F. Haley]" Hoar of Williamsburg. A service celebrating his life will be held at Hickory Neck Episcopal Church, 8300 Richmond Road, Toano, Va. on Tuesday, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, Prostate Cancer Research, 4240 Park Place Court, Glen Allen, Va., 23060, or Richmond Sexual Minority Youth Organization, P.O. Box 5542, Richmond, Va. 23220.
