Evelyn Mary Slattery Horr, 90, passed from our community of Fairfax on March 23, 2008, following a brief illness. She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on May 6, 1917, the daughter of Evelyn Veronica Derry Slattery and Robert Joseph Slattery.

Evelyn spent most of her childhood in Brooklyn, and after graduating from school at Bay Ridge High, she went on to work for the Stokes Coal Company. On Jan. 17, 1941, Evelyn and Arthur Horr of Craigville, N.Y. were married in Brooklyn. They later moved to New Jersey, where she raised her four children with her husband Arthur. They retired to Vermont in 1980. Evelyn and Arthur were married for 61 years, prior to his passing on April 17, 2002.

Throughout her life, Evelyn participated in various activities, including volunteer work with the hospital and teaching religious education. She always enjoyed baking and cooking, as well as completing the daily crossword puzzle and spending time with her flowers and reading.

Evelyn was an active member of St. Luke's Church of Fairfax, and The Fairfax Friendly Neighbor Senior Citizens of Fairfax.

She is survived, and always remembered, by her sister, Gloria Slattery of South Burlington; and her four children, Robert Horr and his wife, Sharon, of Fairfax, William Horr and his wife, Mary, of Tulsa, Okla., Adele Hayes and her husband, James, of Warnerville, N.Y., and Andrew Horr of Fairfax; 10 grandchildren: Kelly Horr Mills, Brett Horr, Robynn Moore, Sean and Shannon Hayes, Rebecca, Daniel, and Megan Horr, Amanda Lavigne, Carrie Horr; and five great-grandchildren: Tre Thierry, David and Jared Mills, and Saoirse and Ula Hayes Hooper; her sister-in-law, Ruth Downing of Bradenton, Fla.; and her beloved partner and protector, Mac, her dog.

A memorial service will be celebrated on April 4, at 10 a.m. in St. Luke's Catholic Church, Huntville Road, Fairfax, with a private family gathering after the service. There will be no viewing or visiting hours.

Donations may be made in Evelyn's memory to either the Fairfax Friendly Neighbor Senior Citizens, c/o Elaine Kirkpatrick, P.O. Box 202, Fairfax, Vt.; or the Fairfax Community Library, 75 Hunt St., Fairfax, Vt.

Evelyn will be greatly missed by those who knew her, especially her family.
