      Agnes E. Guevin, 82
PORTLAND - Agnes E. Guevin, 82, of Brighton Ave., passed away peacefully early Friday morning, Jan. 30, 2004, at Mercy Hospital following a brief illness. At her bedside, were her two sons who loved and cherished her as a provider, teacher, confidant and steadfast friend.

Throughout her life she valued family, independence, autonomy, candor, and any opportunity for laughter and good cheer. Until her final affliction she was able to more than hold her own in any discussion about current affairs.

In 1921, Mrs. Guevin, a daughter of Martin and Barbara (Greeley) Foley, was born to an extended Irish immigrant family that resided in the Newbury Street area of Portland, at the base of Munjoy Hill. She grew up and thrived in the multi-ethnic neighborhood that constituted Munjoy Hill at that time. Those early years were frequently a topic of nostalgic conversation with fond memories throughout her life.

After graduating from Cathedral High School in 1939, Mrs. Guevin was employed with the A&P Bakery on Kennebec Street. It was there she met Ronald her husband to be. They were married after his return from World War II in 1945 and eagerly set about starting and raising a family. After the successive births of two sons, a much anticipated girl was born in 1952, but tragically died the following day. As a young mother, Mrs. Guevin was steadily employed to assist her husband in attaining a good standard of living. However, she made certain that while one parent was working, the other parent was at home attending to their young sons. Their employment efforts culminated in the purchase of a new home in 1955 on Brighton Ave. near Nason's corner. She resided there the remainder of her life.

An engaging, witty, and unpretentious woman, Mrs. Guevin enjoyed interacting and relating to people. As such, she worked numerous food/cocktail waitress position throughout her life. At one time or another, she was employed by the Falmouth Club, the St. Regis Hotel, and the Cumberland Club, all Portland locales. Later on, she was employed by the First National Bakery on Read St. She was last employed as a waitress at the Sportman's Grille located in the West End of Congress St.

With the death of her husband in 1983, Mrs. Guevin focused her attention on her grandchildren and would also minister to the frequent concerns and upsets of the extended family. She was a great listener who possessed tremendous insight and a life time 's worth of acquired wisdom. During her latter years she devoted some time to a grandparents for kids preschool program operating within Sagamore Village.

She is predeceased by an infant daughter, Barbara Guevin in 1952; two sisters, Shelley Mellon and Mary Lebeda; a brother, Joseph Foley; and her husband, Ronaldo Guevin, Sr. in 1983.

She leaves two sons, Edward J. Guevin and his wife Phyllis, Ronald Guevin, both of Portland; a sister, Theresa Arich of Portland; and four grandchildren, Johanna, Ronald, Heidi and Shanna.

Visiting hours will be held Monday, February 2, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St. Prayers will be recited Tuesday, February 3, at 9:15 a.m. at the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Interment will follow in New Calvary Cemetery, South Portland.
