Obituary from Petoskey News-Review, Monday, Mar. 8, 1993:
Frank Schmalzried, 85, orf Carp Lake Township, died March 6, 1993 at his home. He was born Jan. 31, 1908, the son of John and Catherine (Carlton) Schmalzried. He was born in the same home on Schmalzried Road in which he died. On Sept. 8, 1931, he married Jeanette Ramsey in Battle Creek and she survives. Mr. and Mrs. Schmalzried have been lifelong residence of Carp Lake Township, working the family farm for many years. Mr. Schmalzried gave of his time freely serving local governments for more than 35 years and had a lasting effect on the people with whom he served and worked. Mr. Schmalzried served for many years on both the Carp Lake Township Board and the Emmet County Board of Supervisors. He worked on several projects including the Pellston Regional Airport, Emmet County Fair Board, the Equalization Board, the Ways and Means Committee and the Emmet County Medical Care Facility. Mr. Schmalzried was a member of the United Methodist Church of Levering, a charter member of the Levering Lions Club, and a member of the Emmet County Board of Supervisors Association. He served as a substitute rural mail carrier for many years and also sold farm machinery. Survivors include his wife, Jeanette; two daughters, Kay Schmalzried of Traverse City, and Margo Donohue and her husband Dick of Unionville; four grandchildren, Matt and Andrea Isard and Doug and Dawn Donahue; and two sisters, Cora and Alma, and three brothers, Ellis, Norman, and Leon. Visitation was held Sunday at the Nordman Funeral Home in Cheboygan. Funeral was held at 11 a.m. today at the Levering United Methodist Church with the Revs. Larry Brumfield and Dennis Bromley officiating. The family suggests memorial contributions be given to the United Methodist Church of Levering or to Hospice of the Straits.
