HORR MARY ELEANOR FRANCIS April 27, 1906 to November 5, 2004 A long time resident of San Diego (35 years) and North County (57 years) passed away November 5, 2004. Born in Los Angeles to David Lewellyn Francis of Rhydygro, Llanufyl, Wales and Sarah Ann Smith of Liverpool, England. Moved to San Diego at the age of six. Graduated from San Diego High School and completed nurses training in 1925. Because of her young age at the time of graduation it was required that she wait until the following year (1926) to get her nursing certificate. She maintained that certificate for sixty years. She met James Ellsworth Horr of San Diego during her nurses training and they were married December 17, 1927. They were married 66 years before he passed away on February 13, 1994. They had three children, two girls, Margueritte Lee and Nancy Lewellyn which preceded them in death and a surviving son James David Horr. A brother, Richard Lewellyn Francis and sister, Margueritte Kerns Schmeeckle also preceded her in death. In addition to her nursing career she was an instructor for the American National Red Cross in 1942 and 1943. She also served as a gray lady for them in 1952. She was a member of the U.S. Air Force ground observer corps in 1953 and 1954. She received her fifty year membership pin to the Order of Eastern Star, La Jolla Chapter 479, now La Paloma Star Chapter 96 of San Diego. She was a member and Secretary for the North San Diego County Association of Plumbing Contractors Auxiliary in 1961 and 1962, a member of the San Diego Childrens Hospital Auxiliary, a member of Quail Gardens Foundation for over fifteen years, a member of the Republican Womens Club, and the Carlsbad Toastmasters Club in 1966 and 1967. She also was a member of the San Dieguito United Methodist Church and its Esther/Sarah Circle. She worked for the Walker Scott Dept. stores from 1969 to 1975 and received their Mother of the Year award in 1970. You could also see her during the Del Mar Fair time in the flower show entry department processing the entry cards and assisting the judges during judging. Even though she was not physically able to work as a nurse in the later years she was still able to use her nursing skills and work at Scripps Memorial Hospital scheduling surgeries. She is survived by two grandsons, Jeffrey D. Harr and his wife Linda and Gregory J. Harr and his wife Lorna. Five great-grandchildren, Rachel and Courtney Harr, Justin Horr, Joseph and Jordan Hasley. Two nephews, Stanley and Frederick Miley. Funeral Services will be at Greenwood Memorial Park, 4300 Imperial Ave, SD, Ca at 3 p.m. on Nov. 11, 2004. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Fallbrook Hospice, 624 East Elder, Fallbrook, Ca 92028.
