      Obituary:
Lucile Adele Hoar was born February 17, 1910, at Lewis, the daughter of Dellno and Laura B. Cross Hiller. Lucile attended Lewis school and graduated as Valedictorian of the Class of 1928. She attended Sterling College, rooming with her sister Veda, who was teaching school in Sterling at the time. Lucile later graduated from Kansas State College, Manhattan, specializing in mathematics and science.
For two years following graduation, she taught the fourth, fifth and sixth grades in the Fellsburg Grade School. She taught the upper four grades in Centerview; Lewis then came to the Lewis Grade School in 1937. She taught fifth grade her first year in Lewis, and the following twelve years she focused her attention on teaching mathematics and science at the Lewis High School. In total, Lucile taught nearly two decades. Lucile was highly respected as a teacher by her many students over the years, as well as by her colleagues.
Lucile was a repository of family history: an excellent writer, photographer and storyteller. An early highlight of Lucile's life was going to the World's Fair in Chicago in 1934, with her Aunt Emma Cross, cousins Jim & Charles Cross and Jimmy Hoar in a Model A Roadster. Family and friends always enjoyed hearing her rendition of this event and many other stories from the past.
On Thanksgiving Day, November 22, 1945, she married Jimmy Verne Hoar at the Hiller home. The couple made their home on the J.L. Cross farm near Lewis, where she faithfully supported Jimmy's farming career. Lucile and Jimmy were bonded as one, devoted to one another not only as husband and wife, but also as inseparable best friends. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1995 in Lewis amongst many friends and relatives.
Lucile was a lifelong Lewis resident. She was active in the Lewis United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, the Reading Circle, and other community activities, always lending a helping hand to everyone. Lucile and Jimmy were devoted to Uncle Jim and Aunt Nellie Cross, demonstrating loyalty and faithfulness in caring for them in their latter years. Carrying on the tradition, Uncle Jim and Aunt Nellie pioneered in the early 1900's, Lucile and Jimmy began wintering in Englewood, Florida, in the 1960's. Lucile was active in the Englewood United Methodist Church during the winters, making crafts for the pancake breakfasts, and enjoying the numerous other church activities.
Lucile dedicated her life to helping others, especially the young and the elderly, living her faith by expressing selfless devotion to others in so many ways. She will be dearly missed by many. But Lucile can say with the Apostle Paul, "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day ? and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing." (II Tim. 4:7-8 NIV)
Lucile passed from this world December 29, 1999, at Edwards County Hospital, Kinsley, at the age of 89. She was preceded in death by her parents; her three sisters, Harriet (who died at age 2), Golda Hiller Clayton, Veda Hiller Wiltgen; and her husband Jimmy, who passed away March 22, 1996. Survivors include: a nephew, Dr. Richard Wiltgen, Chicago, Illinois; a niece, Janet Pederson, Rochester, Michigan; Janet's daughters, Christina Pederson, Troy, Michigan; Carrie Nelson, Rochester; and several cousins, including Jim and Adah Cross and Mary Helen Cross, all of Lewis.
A memorial service was held 2 p.m. Friday, December 31, 1999, at the United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Deborah Hanes-Nelson presiding. Kathy Lindberg was the organist. Ron and Kathy Lindberg and Doug McLean were vocalists. Pallbearers were Aaron Cross, John McKinney, Wayne Rose, Chad Westphal, Eric Worle, and Jason Worley. Interment was at Wayne Cemetery, Lewis.
Memorials in Lucile's honor may be given to the Lewis United Methodist Church.
