Joseph Allen Hoar, 76, San Mateo, died peacefully at the Bailey Family Center for Caring of Community Hospice in St. Augustine on April 27, 2012 after a short battle with an aggressive cancer with his loving daughter Lynnley (Lyn) and his son in law Kevin at his side.
Joe was born on December 16, 1935 in Portsmouth, NH to Gildea (Adams) and Allen Hoar. He was a graduate of Harmon Hall in York Harbor, Maine then enlisted in the USMC, serving in Korea. He later worked for 38 years until his retirement in 1991 at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine in the Nuclear Submarine Division, a part of many sea trials. In 1976, he transferred to the Philippines at Subic Bay Naval Station with his wife, Patricia and son Allen, returning in 1981 where he made his home in York Maine for many years. He and his wife wintered in Florida and summered in Maine until 2003, when they made San Mateo their permanent home.
Joe was an avid deer hunter while living in Maine, never missing a season. He had a family membership at the York Golf and Tennis Club, York, Maine, as well as at the Palatka Municipal Golf Course, Palatka, FL, where he won many golfing awards including "A Hole in One" and most recently "Golfer of the Year." In his younger years he raced cars and worked as part of the pit crew/racing team at Epping Speedway in NH. He spent many years watching his favorite Nascar driver, Dale Earnhardt, at the Daytona 500 with friends.
Joe was a member of the ST. ASPINQUID LODGE No. 198, A.F. & A.M. (Masons) in York, ME, the Maine Scottish Rite, the Putnam County Shrine Club in East Palatka, FL and the BPOE 1232 ELKS in Palatka.
Joe is survived by the love of his life, Patricia (Schulte) Hoar, of San Mateo, of 37 years. His daughter Lynnley "Lyn" Whitehead and husband, Kevin, grandson, Brandon Ryan and granddaughter, Hannah Leigh of Hampton, NH. All of whom he was very close to and very proud of. His sister, Judy McKenna of Pahrump, Nevada, his nephews Steven and Timothy McKenna of Canada. His estranged daughter, Alisa Dawn (Hoar). He was predeceased by his only son, Allen Hoar in 1990.
Joe will be sadly missed by his family and his many friends, both in Maine and Florida.
At Joe's request, there will be no calling hours or funeral services. A Celebration of his Life at the Palatka Golf Course will be announced at a later date as well as a Memorial Golf Tournament in his honor.
The family would like to thank the staff at Baptist Medical Center Downtown, ICU in Jacksonville and Community Hospice for the care Joe received while there.
