    John P. Hoar, 79
    Plaistow, N.H. - Maj. John P. Hoar, 79, a professional engineer, died December 30, 1997 at Exeter Hospital in Exeter, N.H.
    He was the husband of Helen R. (Powers) Hoar, who died this past September.
    Born and educated in Haverhill, Mass., he graduated from Wentworth Institute in 1937 with a degree in steam and electrical engineering and in 1940 with a degree in structural engineering. He also graduated from the Lowell Institute at MIT in 1939 with a degree in mechanical engineering and in 1947 with a degree in electrical engineering.
    From 1938 to 1940, he served in the Army National Guard. He saw active duty in the Army from 1940 to 1946 during World War II. An artillery and infantry officer, he was also involved in fighter pilot training. Mr. Hoar was in the reserves from 1946 until his retirement in 1978. He was a life member and former board member of the Veterans Association of First Corps of Cadets.
    Mr. Hoar was a registered professional engineer. From 1937, he was a steam utilization engineer for Boston Edison; from 1947, he was heating engineer for Cornell University. In 1952, he went to work for Polaroid Corp., where he was a department manager and senior principal engineer for European Products Facilities. He worked closely with Dr. Edwin Land with many special projects. When he retired in 1982, he was utilities manager.
    Mr. Hoar married in 1943. The couple lived in Somerville, Mass., Ithaca, N:Y. and Newton, Mass., before moving to Arlington, Mass., in 1953, where they lived until moving to Centerville in 1986. Last month, he moved to Plaistow to live with his daughter.
    Mr. Hoar was a charter member of the Central Engineering Society; a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers; and a life member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, and a board member of its Boston Chapter.
    Mr. Hoar was coach, manager and president of the Arlington Little League. He was a Eucharistic minister at St. James Church in Arlington and St. Francis Xavier Church in Hyannis.
    He was a member of the American Legion, Knights of Columbus, Reserve Officer's Association, Osterville Men's Club and Centerville Civic Association. He was junior vice commander and commander of the Military Order of World Wars, Cape Cod Chapter. He was on the sub-committee of Energy and Environment for the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce.
    Surviving are a son, William P. Hoar of Silver Spring, Md.; a daughter, EiIeen T. Dube of Plaistow; four sisters, Marion Gavin of Hingham, Mass., Elizabeth Hoar and Patricia Williams, both of Arlington, Mass., and Dorothy Colbert of Concord; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was also the father of the late John P. Hoar Jr., Kevin Hoar and Mary Kathleen Hoar.
    A funeral was held January 2 at the Donne, Beal & Ames Funeral Home in Hyannis, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Francis Xavier Church in Hyannis. Burial followed in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.

    Deceased Name: Alice a. Duncan, 88
    CROWNSVILLE,MD.? MRS. Alice A. Duncan, of Crownsville, Maryland, died peacefully on January 14, 2012 at Fairfield Nursing Home in Crownsville, Maryland. She was 88.
    Prior to Fairfield, she resided with her daughter & son-inlaw, Kathleen & George Sherry of Crownsville. Alice also spent 4 wonderful years at Atria Manresa Assisted Living in Annapolis and 2 years in Eastport after moving to MD in 2004. Alice was a native New Englander and spent her golden years living on Cape Cod with her husband Joseph (Joe) Duncan. She was born Alice Ann Powers on February 2, 1923 in Haverhill MA the third of four daughters to Etta Owens Powers and William Powers of Bradford, MA.
    In the late 1940's she worked at Western Electric where she met her future husband Joseph (Joe) Duncan of Scotland. They were married on January 14, 1950. Alice loved traveling, sewing, crafting and antiquing. She was a competitive bowler and belonged to several leagues in Haverhill and Cape Cod. She recently was named the queen of bingo & cards by her fellow players and friends. Marylanders often commented about her beautiful crystal blue eyes and her distinctive New England accent.
    Alice is preceded in death by her loving husband Joseph Duncan, her sisters Mary Donovan and Helen Hoar, her nieces Kathleen Hoar and Elaine Donovan Marsella and many in-laws in Scotland. Alice is survived by her daughter Kathleen Sherry and son-in-law George Sherry of Crownsville, MD; her son David Duncan of Portland, OR; her sister, Margaret (Billie) Dufresne of Saylorsburg, PA and many nieces and nephews in New England, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Scotland.
    Much gratitude is given to the great and loving care she has received at Fairfield Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Crownsville, MD and the compassionate care from Heartland Hospice of MD. Special thanks to private nurse Shirley Russ for all her loving care of Alice over the years.

    She was the loving wife of Clement "Duff" P. Dufresne who passed away in 2008.

    She was a member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Gilbert, Pa.
    Billie volunteered as a Candy striper at the Morristown Memorial Hospital in Morristown, NJ and the Western Pocono Community Library in Brodheadsville, Pa. She loved to play golf and got a Hole in One at the Harbor Hills Golf and Country Club. She was an avid Red Sox fan and loved to read and garden.
    She will be deeply missed by her daughter, Jody Lutkins and her husband David of Saylorsburg, Pa.; her three grandchildren, Christopher Lutkins of Blakeslee, Pa., Jeffrey Lutkins of Saylorsburg, Pa., and Sara Dufresne of Morris Plains, N.J. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and dear friends. Billie's dog and faithful companion, "Molly," will miss her loving care.
    Billie was preceded in death by a son, Michael J. Dufresne; a grandson, Gregory Lutkins and three sisters, Mary Donovan, Helen Hoar and Alice Duncan.
    May our memories of Billie continue to bring smiles to our faces, and may we always know that she is near.

    Mary Josephine Lysaght (1894-1973), who was born in Lisconnor, County Clare on January 4, 1894. In 1911, she came to Haverhill, Massachusetts where she lived with and worked for her uncle James Jordan (1870-1932). He ran a restraunt and store there. In 1918, she married Patrick Francis Hoar (1892-1942), a native of Anascaul, Kerry.
    Mary was the daughter of John and Bridget (Jordan) Lysaght of Lisconnor. The Lysaghts had 8 children Austin, John, Ellen, Michael, Patrick, Mary, Thomas, and Margaret. Only Mary and Tom married. Tom married Julia Howe and had one son "J.J." in Ireland. "J.J." never married and died recently. Mary and Pat had 6 children all born in Haverhill. They were John (1918-1997), Marion (1920- ), Elizabeth (1921-2003), Francis (1924-1996), Patricia (1926- ) and Dorothy (1930- ).
