FRANK A. SMILEY -- The Smiley family, of which today Frank A. Smiley, of Ellery
township, is one of the representatives, is an old one in Chautauqua County, its members
having played conspicuous parts in many different departments of the community?s life
during several generations and are now numerous in the region. Mr. Smiley was born in
the town of Harmony, March 26, 1862, a son of Freeborn L. and Anna (Brown) Smiley,
the former a prominent member of the community where he was engaged for many years
in business as a manufacturer of wagons.

Frank A,. Smiley spent his childhood in his native region, dividing his time between
attending the local district schools and the wholesome sports and pastimes of country
boys. Early in life he began to display that peculiar talent for doing all things well that is
so characteristic of the sturdy, self-reliant youth of America, a talent which may be seen at
present in the various pursuits and enterprises in which he is engaged and in all of which
he has succeeded equally. Upon completing his studies at the local schools, Mr. Smiley
took up the lumber business as an occupation and continued therein for fourteen years,
and later became the owner of a well equipped mill. He also entered the mercantile realm,
and for a time maintained successful stores at Bemus Point and Lakewood. In all his
ventures Mr. Smiley met with the well merited success of his industry and intelligence,
gradually becoming one of the best known and most highly respected figures of the
community and an influential factor in the general business life. Mr. Smiley is a
Republican in politics and although his many and various activities prevent him from
taking that part in public affairs for which his abilities fit him, keeps himself abreast of all
the vital issues of the day, and is a staunch supporter of policies of his party. He is an
active and valued member of Centralia Grange.

Frank A. Smiley married (first) Georgie C. Beck, whose death occurred June 16, 1906 and
by whom he had four children, as follows: George, born Dec. 5, 1890; Harry A., born
    April 14, 1892; Raymond F., born Dec. 11, 1899; and Agnes A., born Jan. 13, 1902. He
married (second) July 15, 1909, Louise F. Smith, of Jamestown, N.Y., a daughter of

Article taken from "The Early History of Fluvanna Chautauqua County,
N.Y. with numerous biographical and family sketches by Betty Sherwin" .
Alexander Brown, Jr. and Lucy Hoard I his wife, and two children, came to
Fluvanna between Dec. 25, 1825 and October 1827. He built a shingled house
opposite Minor Shaw near the lake shore in 1828. Mr. Brown also built a
tannery near the western part of where the "Johnson Ice House" stood. It
was operated by him for a number of years. At that time tanbark cost $1.50
per cord and was ground under a large stone. As all tanneries at that time
used this method for grinding bark, a description would be of interest.
These stories were circular, about eight inches thick and about seven feet
across. This was set on edge with a horizontal shaft attached to a
revolving center post; a horse was hitched to this shaft and the stone was
rolled in a circle on the bark placed on the floor. Some times water power
was used for this purpose. In 1845 or 1850 steam came into use for
propelling machinery for the larger tanneries. This small tannery was a
convenience to the early settlers, as nearly all farmers at that early
period had leather made for their family boots and shoes, and also for other
    purposes.

Mr. Brown conducted this tannery until about 1846. Mr. Brown died May
l3,1849. Mr. and Mrs. Brown were the parents of ten children. Lorenzo
and Harry came with their parents; Samuel, Almon, Abagail, Alexander,
George, Jane and Sarah, were born in Fluvanna. Lorenzo, unmarried, for
many years, lived in the house now the home of James L. Brown (a nephew).
Samuel Brown married Abagail Gates; Abagail married Isaac Sherman; both of
these families lived in Fluvanna until their death. Sarah Brown lived with
    Mrs. Sherman until her death in 1917. Almon Brown lives at Chautauqua;
George and Jane went west to Kansas. Alexander Brown enlisted and served
during the Civil War. At the close of the war he returned and married
Sarah Hudson, March 1866. They were the parents of five children.
Hudson, married Eva Rhodes, lives in Harmony; Minnie married George Fargo,
also lives in Harmony; James, married Grace Stephenson. He is a prominent
citizen of Fluvanna. He owns and operates a saw mill and cider mill. He
was elected school trustee at different times, was elected Highway
Superintendent for the Town of Ellicott 1919, and is prominent in other
activities. Mr. and Mrs. Brown are the parents of five children.

After Alexander Brown and Sarah Hudson were married, he bought the house
which stood across from the old homestead of the Bentleys and moved it down
to his farm, corner of the Strunk road where it now is. This house was
built on land owned by Walter Simmons and was moved to the corner opposite
the Bentley house sometime about 1832. Warner Shaw and his mother lived
there until after he was married in 1836. Mrs. Shaw then lived alone until
the farm was sold to Mr. Bentley in 1846. Mr. Bentley sold the corner
where the house stood to George Chase soon after they purchased the farm in
    1849.

Alexander married Lucy Hoard. Lucy (daughter of Samuel Hoard and Lucy Gates) was born about 1801 in Berlin, Rensselaer Co, New York, USA; died on 17 Apr 1890 in Fluvanna, Chautauqua Co, New York, USA; was buried in Ellicott, Chautauqua Co, New York, USA (Fluvanna Cemetery). [Group Sheet]
