Carrie came to Boston in 1871, she & William were married the following year. A little over a year later she gave birth to their first child, a baby boy and he was stillborn. A year later, the day before her husband's birthday, she gave birth to a second child, a baby girl, and again, another stillborn baby. The following year she gave birth to a baby girl she named Martha Elizabeth and called her "Mattie".
It was 3?a years later when she had another baby, a little girl she called Mary Louise. Carrie was pregnant with another child, when Mary Louise was 1?a and died from a debility (weakness).
Five months later she gave birth to another baby girl she named "Caroline".
Two years later she finally had a son and she named him William Henry. At this point, Mattie was 7 years old and Caroline was 2 years old, and she had her baby boy named after his father??so life was looking better?.....when baby William was 2 MONTHS old, her husband William got sick and DIED! He died in Malden on 12/31/1883, at the age of 42, from pneumonia.
She had to have suffered immense depression, married only thirteen years, she had lost three children and now her husband gone, leaving her with three little ones. Living in a different country, so far from her parents and siblings had to have added to her difficulties at this time in her life. I'm sure having to care for those babies had a lot to do with giving her the strength to carry on.
