    Mrs. Marion Hoar, longtime resident of Dundee Street in St. Johnsbury, passed away Thursday, Jan. 27, 2011, at St. Johnsbury Health & Rehab Center.
    Marion was born on May 25, 1908, in Lyndon, Vt., the elder daughter of the late Jane (Aldrich) and Charles Murphy. She was schooled in Lyndon and graduated from Lyndon Institute with the class of 1925.
    After graduation she was hired by Bell Telephone Company in Boston. She returned to St. Johnsbury where she met and married Edward Wright Hoar on Jan. 11, 1930.
    Marion was a homemaker while her family was growing up. She was well known for her artistry in handcrafts, such as sewing, knitting, crocheting, rug making and quilting, having appeared on WCAX Channel 3 displaying her work.
    In 1952, she and her husband opened their store on Railroad Street called Modern Home Appliances, which they later moved to Eastern Avenue and renamed the store Modern Home Gift Shop.
    After Mr. Hoar's death in 1991, Marion moved to Burlington to be nearer family. She resided there until 2006 when she came to the Health and Rehab Center in St. Johnsbury.
    Marion was predeceased by her husband, Edward, her sister Irene Hutchins, two sons-in-law, Allan Merritt Sr. and David J. Bixby.

    Surviving are four children, Beverly Merritt of Rutland, Betty McCarthy and husband James of Ocala, Fla., Marilyn Bixby of Shelburne and William Hoar and wife Ila of Barnet; her 10 grandchildren, Allan Merritt and wife Sarah of Shelburne; William Merritt, Steve Merritt and wife Julie, and Lynn Merritt, all of Rutland, James Merritt and wife Diana of Pittsford, James McCarty and Brian McCarthy of Wappingers Falls, N.Y.; Karen Procida and husband Richard of Whitesboro, N.Y., Sean Hoar of Montpelier, Kelly Greaves and husband Paul of Walden; 10 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held at Sayles Funeral Home this Sunday at 1 p.m. Burial will be at a later date at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Memorial contributions could be directed to South Congregational Church, 1052 Main St., St. Johnsbury VT 05819. Sayles Funeral Home is located at 525 Summer St. in St. Johnsbury.
