Cheslie F., the last of the four children of John Clark and Angie Lucia (Rowe) Saunders, was born in Hanover, Oxford, Maine, USA on January 21,1883. In October 1905 he married Addie Louise (Horr), born at Cumberland Mills, Cumberland, Maine, USA on November 11, 1882, the daughter of Rensselaer C. and Jenny (Swan) Horr. In 1920 Cheslie started the dowel manufacturing business in Hanover, Oxford, Maine, USA with his brother Addison R. who had moved from Lawrence, Essex, Massachusetts, USA. They remained in business under the name of the Saunders Brothers until December 29, 1929 when the business was incorporated under the name of the Hanover Dowell Company. After the death of Addison in 1936, Cheslie carried on the business in Hanover, Oxford, Maine, USA until 1939 when the lower Mill (3-12) burned. Cheslie moved his machinery to Bethel, Oxford, Maine, USA where he continued to manufacture dowels. The business has remained in the family as a family enterprise up to the present time. Following Cheslie's death, the business was operated by his two sons, Wallace E. and Addison C.
Cheslie served nine years as an elected selectman of Hanover, Oxford, Maine, USA serving as first selectman for four years in 1927, 1928, 1929 and 1934; as second selectman in 1926, 1941 and 1942; and as third selectman in 1918 and 1925. He was operator of the Hanover Ferry for a few years. Cheslie and Addie lived for many years on the old Jesse Duston, Sr. Place, map location No. 104. He then moved to the so-called Joel Howe Place, map location No. 118 and finally, in 1925, he purchased the Hanover Inn, map location No. 30, where he resided and had his business office. The building is now owned by Paul E. and Lynne I. Ramsey where they reside.
Cheslie passed away in 1955 at the age of 72 and his wife Addie in 1962 at the age of 80. Both are buried in Lot 17B in the Hanover Cemetery, Hanover, Oxford, Maine, USA.
