    Gerald W. "Bud" Hoar, 72, of Windham, Maine, a former educator, died of lung cancer Tuesday at Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine.
    He was assistant principal and then superintendent of schools in Tolland, Conn., from 1963 to 1965, and became superintendent of the South Hadley schools in 1965. He was the state's youngest superintendent at the time and served until his retirement in 1982.
    He started his career in Winsted, Conn., in 1951. He also taught in Bakersville, Conn., and New Hartford, Conn. He then became a business partner with Everett Reed until 1992, when he returned to Maine.
    Born in Westbrook, Maine, he was an Eagle Scout at the age 16. He graduated from Westbrook High School in 1945 and from Gorham State Teachers College in 1950. He received a master's degree in education at the University of Northern Colorado in 1951. He served in the Coast Guard from 1945 to 1946.
    He had been a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in South Hadley, South Hadley Falls Congregational Church and North Windham Union Church, where he was a trustee and chairman. He sang in the chancel choirs at the Congregational Church and Union Church.
    He was active in the Holyoke Rotary Club, particularly its foreign student program. He was a corporator of Holyoke Hospital and a member of the Connecticut Valley Superintendents, Phi Delta Kappa, Kappa Delta Phi, the South Hadley Choral Society and American Legion Post 62 in Westbrook., Maine, where he was post commander.
    He was a mentor for men suffering from breast cancer and recently published an article on the disease in the American Legion magazine, Legionnaire.
    He leaves his wife of 50 years, the former Emmelinn Fredericksen; two sons, James E. of Windham and John L. of Easthampton; and eight grandchildren. His daughter, Sharon L. Thompson, died in December.
    The funeral will be Friday morning at North Windham Union Church. Calling hours are this afternoon and evening at Dolby Funeral Chapel in Windham and Friday evening at Ryder Funeral Home in South Hadley. A graveside service will be held Saturday morning in Evergreen Cemetery, South Hadley.

    Bessie R. Hoar, 90, of West Street died Sunday in a Portland hospital after a brief illness.
    She was born in Albert County, New Brunswick, Canada, a daughter of Abner and Flora Wilbur Bartlett. She attended New Brunswick schools, moving to Westbrook in 1926. For 10 years she was employed by the Portland Newspapers as a proofreader.
    She was a member of the Westbrook-Warren Congregational Church and was the last surviving member of the Craigie Class of the former Warren Congregational Church.
    She was fond of knitting and crocheting and was always available to furnish candy and pastries at church functions.
    Her husband, Leonard T. Hoar, died in 1979.
    She is survived by a son, Gerald W. Hoar of North Windham; a sister, Allene Steeves of Hillsborough, N.B.; three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
    Funeral services and burial will be in Hopewell Hill, N.B. Arrangements are by the Hay Funeral Home, Westbrook.
