Congregational Church - Several settlers of Salem township, who had previously worshipped with the Presbyterian church, decided to form a society to be known as the Congregational church, and a meeting was therefore called on March 27, 1839. The following persons gave their names as members of said society: Isaac Hamilton, Charles Pratt, Ethiel Hubbard, Orange Green, Hiram Rhodes, Enoch C. Hamilton, Harvey Hubbard, Edwin Hubbard, Reuben Peebles, J. H. Peebles, Parley Crowell, Cola Bennett, Zebedee Waldron, S. G. Haywood, Sebra Perkins, George N. Stoddard, Seth Thompson, J. W. Hamilton, John Peebles, Lorin Pratt, and Adam Spence. Zebedee Waldron, Adam Spence, S. G. Haywood, Parley Crowell, Harvey Hubbard and Joseph H. Peebles were the first trustees. Zebedee Waldron was the first secretary, and Harvey Hubbard the first treasurer. A call was extended to Hiram S. Hamilton to become the first pastor. A house of worship was commenced in 1848, and dedicated as "Zion Church" on Aug. 8, 1849. The cost of the building was about $900. The organization has been very prosperous, and has for its present pastor, the Rev. Mr. Gilson.

[[The following census information was compiled and contributed by Joyce S.

    Source: Book
Title: The Peirce Family of the Old Colony or The Lineal Descendants of Abraham Peirce. By Ebenezer W. Peirce of Freetown, Mass. Published 1870
    Pages 384 and 385
"Abigail Peirce. Daughter of George Peirce and wife Sarah Peirce; m. John Hoar, of Middleboro, now Lakeville, and they removed to Pelham, Mass. John Hoar served in the patriot forces in Rhode Island in the war of the Revolution, and was in the company commanded by Capt. Henry Peirce. He was a son of Robert Hoar and wife Rachel Hoskins, grandson of Samuel Hoar and wife Rebecca Peirce. He received a provision in the last will of Major Peter Hoar, of Middleboro, who was his half brother.
John Hoar and wife Abigail Peirce had:
    Calvin, married Betsey _________
    Abigail, married _______ Hamilton
    Rachel, married _______ Hamilton
    Judith,
    Harriet,
    Sarah,
    Evelyn Leonard,
    Philip, married Harriet Peirce (?)
    Hermon,
    Washington,
    Edmund,
    William,
    Eddie,
For what is here given concerning the family of John Hoar, the writer is indebted to Miss Abiah Peirce [Abiah Peirce, born Jan. 27, 1792, dau. of Hermon Peirce and Rachel Hoar]."
Note- not listed are Mercia, Adah, or Nelson. Her "Eddie" might be a nickname for one of these three not named.

The census uses name HOAR until 1850 then uses HORR. John and Abigail (Peirce) Hoar's neighbor, John Cowan, uses HORR in his memorandum book, as early as 1837.
("Memorandum Book" by John(?) Cowan of Pelham Hollow, Massachusetts. He wrote of events of his life between the years 1837 and 1857. Mr. Cowan was father-in-law to John and Abigail (Peirce) Hoar's son Nelson)

1800 census for Pelham has, image 3 of 6, with the H surnames, what looks like John Hoar with the name crossed out, no numbers. It is almost half way down the image. Maybe John refused to give information??? There are three other names crossed out on this page alone. Did not find any other Hoars. Pelham was the home of the historic 1783 Shay's Rebellion.
